Authorities later handcuffed and shackled Sielaff and sent him to a crowded U.S. immigration detention center. He spent 16 days locked up before being allowed to fly home to Germany.</p><p>"Since President Donald Trump took office, there have been other incidents of tourists like Sielaff being stopped at U.S. border crossings and held for weeks at U.S. immigration detention facilities before being allowed to fly home at their own expense.</p><p>"They include another German tourist who was stopped at the Tijuana crossing on Jan. 25. The group’s counsel made the same argument in a letter to HHS on Tuesday.</p><p>"How we got here: HHS said Monday it would give Maine 10 days to sign an agreement to bar transgender students from women’s sports or risk enforcement action from the Justice Department, POLITICO’s Bianca Quilantan reports.</p><p>"According to a statement by HHS, federal officials say the Maine Department of Education, the Maine Principals’ Association and Greely High School, which had a transgender student compete on a women’s team, violated <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/TitleIX" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TitleIX</span></a>, the anti-sex discrimination law, with their policies that allow transgender students to compete on girls’ sports teams.</p><p>"HHS had launched a brief investigation into Maine’s policies on transgender students in sports on Feb. 21 after President Donald Trump threatened Maine’s federal funding and singled out Gov.
