I had been trying to find the right time to head to California’s Central Valley to photograph migratory birds again. I was last there around New Year’s Day, but since then various things have kept me away — mostly that the times I ‘ve been free were the times when my favorite foggy conditions were not in place. Fresno has a blossom tour too but I assume most of the people on SFBA.social don't want to drive that far south to see it. However, any SoCal members might want to head to Fresno to do so. It's a fun way to explore the Sierra foothills east of Modesto where you will find most of the almond orchards. Bird photography is my excuse for going to this place in the winter months, but this winter landscape is the main attraction. I love what happens here during the spells of thick tule fog, when the landscape is obscured and the light becomes soft and mysterious. G Dan Mitchell“Wetlands, Dawn Light and Fog” — Drifting fog obscures the distant view at dawn in Central Valley wetlands. Yes, another foggy Central Valley morning landscape. What can I say? The subject is often on my mind this time of year. While it isn’t always that attractive in the summer, during the winter months this landscape is transformed by the arrival of migratory birds, the appearance of seasonal ponds, and the tule fog. On the right day, in the right conditions, these wetlands can sometimes feel like they are all about the sky. Standing next to a large pond that extends into the distance, the sky above and its inverse reflective twin stretch out in front of you. The large tree in this scene has been the subject of at least one other recently-shared photograph of mine. The earlier image focused almost exclusively on the tree. G Dan Mitchell“Wetlands, Clearing Fog” — Morning tule fog clears to reveal wetlands ponds, grasses, and distant winter trees. I made this photograph during a fortuitous moment of light and atmosphere. We were in California Central Valley wetlands primarily to photograph migratory birds. The tule fog was thick when we began our work before sunrise. G Dan Mitchell“Wetlands Morning, Tule Fog” — Tule fog begins to clear above wetlands just beore a winter sunrise. Some of my favorite photography conditions happen when it is difficult to see. I love photographing directly into the sunlight, in fog and mist, in marginal light, and at night. This is partly just my fascination with the complex lighting. G Dan Mitchell“Wetland Plants, Tule Fog” — Tule fog clears over wetlands plants at dawn. We arrived here well before sunrise, paused long enough to assemble our photography gear, and then started on a slow drive along narrow gravel levee roads through a landscape of wetlands and scattered trees. Tule fog was still drifting about, but it was thinning and the clouds overhead in the colorful sky were visible.
