What can I say? The subject is often on my mind this time of year. While it isn’t always that attractive in the summer, during the winter months this landscape is transformed by the arrival of migratory birds, the appearance of seasonal ponds, and the tule fog. The latter obscures some of the more mundane elements of this landscape and produces a mysterious, moody atmosphere…continues: <a href="https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/02/12/wetlands-dawn-light-and-fog-2/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">gdanmitchell.com/2025/02/12/we</span><span class="invisible">tlands-dawn-light-and-fog-2/</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/wetlands" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>wetlands</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/dawn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>dawn</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/fog" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fog</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/landscapephotography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>landscapephotography</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/nature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nature</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/centralvalley" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>centralvalley</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>photography</span></a></p>
G Dan Mitchell<p>“Reeds, Sky, Reflecting Pond” — The sky above reed-covered wetlands islands is reflected in the surface of a pond. </p><p>On the right day, in the right conditions, these wetlands can sometimes feel like they are all about the sky. Standing next to a large pond that extends into the distance, the sky above and its inverse reflective twin stretch out in front of you. They meet at the horizon, with may be defined by a thick line of vegetation, as here, or the water and the sky may merge into a single thing…continues: <a href="https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/02/10/reeds-sky-reflecting-pond/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">gdanmitchell.com/2025/02/10/re</span><span class="invisible">eds-sky-reflecting-pond/</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/nature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nature</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/landscapephotography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>landscapephotography</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/wetlands" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>wetlands</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/reflection" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>reflection</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/centralvalley" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>centralvalley</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>photography</span></a></p>
G Dan Mitchell<p>“Winter Trees, Dawn Sky” — Bare winter trees silhouetted against a foggy dawn sky. </p><p>The large tree in this scene has been the subject of at least one other recently-shared photograph of mine. The earlier image focused almost exclusively on the tree. It was shot with a longer focal length, and the tree nearly fills the frame. Here I used a wide angle lens and worked from a distance, showing the tree it the context of its landscape surroundings…continues: <a href="https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/02/08/winter-trees-dawn-sky/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">gdanmitchell.com/2025/02/08/wi</span><span class="invisible">nter-trees-dawn-sky/</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/winter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>winter</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/trees" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>trees</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/nature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nature</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/centralvalley" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>centralvalley</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/landscapephotography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>landscapephotography</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/dawn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>dawn</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>photography</span></a></p>
G Dan Mitchell<p>“Wetlands, Clearing Fog” — Morning tule fog clears to reveal wetlands ponds, grasses, and distant winter trees. </p><p>I made this photograph during a fortuitous moment of light and atmosphere. We were in California Central Valley wetlands primarily to photograph migratory birds. The tule fog was thick when we began our work before sunrise. But later on, as we came to the edge of this pond, the fog thinned around us, producing a bit of clear air even as more distant surroundings remained shrouded in fog…continues: <a href="https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/02/04/wetlands-clearing-fog/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">gdanmitchell.com/2025/02/04/we</span><span class="invisible">tlands-clearing-fog/</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/wetlands" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>wetlands</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/fog" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fog</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/morning" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>morning</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/CentralValley" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CentralValley</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/nature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nature</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/landscape" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>landscape</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>photography</span></a></p>
G Dan Mitchell<p>“Wetlands Morning, Tule Fog” — Tule fog begins to clear above wetlands just beore a winter sunrise. </p><p>Some of my favorite photography conditions happen when it is difficult to see. I love photographing directly into the sunlight, in fog and mist, in marginal light, and at night. This is partly just my fascination with the complex lighting. But I think it is also about making photographs that don’t quite show it all, and which leave it to the viewer to wonder about the subjects and imagine what else might be there...continues: <a href="https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/02/02/wetlands-morning-tule-fog/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">gdanmitchell.com/2025/02/02/we</span><span class="invisible">tlands-morning-tule-fog/</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/wetlands" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>wetlands</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/fog" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fog</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/dawn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>dawn</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/centralvalley" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>centralvalley</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/nature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nature</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/landscape" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>landscape</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>photography</span></a></p>
G Dan Mitchell<p>“Wetlands Birds, Dawn Fog” — Black-necked stilts and other wetland birds in a quiet pond as dawn fog begins to thin. </p><p>Believe it or not, I still have more photographs from our three days of photography around New Year’s Day. To recap, a group of friends and fellow photographers assembled before dawn to greet the first sunrise of the new year. We spent the rest of the day sharing food and good times and photographing this landscape and its wildlife…continues: <a href="https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/01/31/wetlands-birds-dawn-fog/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">gdanmitchell.com/2025/01/31/we</span><span class="invisible">tlands-birds-dawn-fog/</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/centralvalley" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>centralvalley</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/birds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>birds</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/nature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nature</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/landscapephotography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>landscapephotography</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/fog" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fog</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/sunrise" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sunrise</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>photography</span></a></p>
G Dan Mitchell<p>“Wetland Plants, Tule Fog” — Tule fog clears over wetlands plants at dawn. </p><p>We arrived here well before sunrise, paused long enough to assemble our photography gear, and then started on a slow drive along narrow gravel levee roads through a landscape of wetlands and scattered trees. Tule fog was still drifting about, but it was thinning and the clouds overhead in the colorful sky were visible. Before long we arrived at a spot along the west side of the ponds, where we had a view to the east and the light of dawn…continues: <a href="https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/01/27/wetland-plants-tule-fog/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">gdanmitchell.com/2025/01/27/we</span><span class="invisible">tland-plants-tule-fog/</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/dawn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>dawn</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/wetlands" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>wetlands</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/centralvalley" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>centralvalley</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/fog" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fog</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/nature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nature</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/landscape" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>landscape</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>photography</span></a></p>
