Private firms ran almost all care homes forced to shut for breaches in #England

Research published last week by Oxford University reveals that 98% of adult care homes closed by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in England to protect #disabled, mentally ill & #elderly people from harm between 2011 & 2023 were operated by #private companies for #profit.. Only 12 homes were run by either local authorities or charities.

This meant and still means that #carehomes restrict the amount of places they will provide for individuals funded by local authorities so that they can stay in business. This in turn makes it more difficult to discharge patients from hospitals - with consequences that are only too obvious! And for some reason the state chooses to overpay massively for private health care rather than pay anything like a breakeven rate for social care!

'The healthcare regulator is so badly run that patients in #England cannot trust the safety ratings it issues for #hospitals, #CareHomes or #GPPractices, the health secretary has said.

Wes Streeting said on Friday the #CareQualityCommission was in such deep crisis it was not able to do its basic job reliably
