Angry Metal Guy<p><a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/barbarous-initium-mors-review/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Barbarous – Initium Mors Review</a></p><p><i>By Angry Metal Guy</i></p><p><strong><strong>By: <span>Nameless_n00b_603</span></strong></strong></p><p></p><p>Death metal boasts a lush buffet of subgenres. From mind-flaying technicality to chilling dissonance to wanton mirth, there’s something for everyone. Unmoved by how much the genre has evolved, some folks just want the straightforward, grass-fed variety that defined American death metal in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. And what bloodsport that was—<strong>Cannibal Corpse</strong> hammer-smashed listeners to paste, <strong>Deicide</strong> seared anti-religious sentiment into their collective hide, and <strong>Morbid Angel</strong> infected them with tainted melody. <strong>Barbarous</strong> slides comfortably into the fray, wielding debut <em>Initium Mors</em>, but does it pack enough punch to survive the melee?<a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/barbarous-initium-mors-review/#fn-221993-1" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">1</a></p><p></p><p>Inspiration plays an immediate role in <strong>Barbarous</strong>’s sound. Though they hail from Oakland, California, it’s the Tampa Bay scene that casts the longest shadow. <strong>Cannibal Corpse</strong>’s influence is undeniable, providing the blueprint for punishing grooves and six-string savagery (“The Tomb Spawn,” “Conscious Decomposition”). Vocalist Travis LaBerge retches and roars somewhere between <strong>Deicide</strong>’s Glen Benton and <strong>Hate Eternal</strong>’s Eric Rutan,<a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/barbarous-initium-mors-review/#fn-221993-2" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">2</a> while the music also harkens to early <strong>Deicide</strong> at times (compare “By Lead or Steel” with “Serpents of the Light”). There are additional influences, too, including <strong>Necrot </strong>and <strong>Skeletal Remains</strong>, two bands heavily influenced by <strong>Death </strong>and <strong>Morbid Angel</strong>, proving all roads lead to Tampa.<a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/barbarous-initium-mors-review/#fn-221993-3" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">3</a> This isn’t to say that <strong>Barbarous</strong> doesn’t flex their own brand of muscular death metal. The title track does a fabulous job of baking <em>Slaughter of the Soul</em>-esque melody into the chorus while staying true to the Floridian Sound Machine’s jackhammering boogie.<a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/barbarous-initium-mors-review/#fn-221993-4" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">4</a> I see flashes of a distinct identity in <em>Initium Mors, </em>but more refinement would serve <strong>Barbarous </strong>to forge their own path out from the shadows of giants.</p><p>Throughout <em>Initium Mors</em>, <strong>Barbarous</strong> pounds and pummels with neck-snapping fury and brawny chugs. Any track would effortlessly slot into a respectable workout playlist, with “By Lead or Steel” and “Tools of the Trade” being my choice cuts. Opener “Injection of the Exhumed” storms out the gates with a phlegm-rattling gut punch buoyed by aggressive riffing and blast beats, followed by a <strong>Slayer</strong>-laced wail. And that’s just the first twenty seconds. Hostile grooves and pulverizing paces drive the momentum across <em>Initium Mors</em>’s fleeting runtime, never surrendering a moment to catch your breath. <strong>Barbarous</strong>’s unflinching imperative is to carve listeners to the root, evidenced by the album’s razor-sharp guitar-playing (“Tools of the Trade,” “Conscious Decomposition”) courtesy of Zach Weed and Thomas Belfiore. Solos set fire to tracks when they kick in, whether it’s via soulful swagger (“By Lead or Steel”) or finger-blistering fury (“Coup de Grace”). Either way, they’re unfailingly fun. Travis Zupo’s dynamic drumming bludgeons with teeth-rattling thunder (“Conscious Decomposition”) while LaBerge stays the course with calculated, vomitous barks. The only underseasoned component is Zach Jakes’s bass guitar, which is a commentary on audibility rather than skill. Listening for bass in <em>Initium Mors </em>reminds me of Tantalus—the more I crank the volume to hear what that sweet bottom end is doing, the murkier the wall of sound becomes.<a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/barbarous-initium-mors-review/#fn-221993-5" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">5</a> Considering the meaty through-line that bass provides in many a death metal casserole, elevating its heft would push <strong>Barbarous</strong>’s recipe to gloriously heinous heights.</p><p></p><p>Production and mastering are a mixed bag, presenting opportunities and highlights. The album is <strong>LOUD</strong>, and while that’s generally how I like to listen to death metal, a more spacious mix would have improved the overarching balance. For an album brimming with balls-out belligerence, such an oppressive production creates an exhausting listen despite the twenty-nine-minute runtime. Still, there’s plenty to praise. Guitars and drums are front and center, so it’s easy to appreciate their intricacies and chops. LaBerge’s vocals are also conspicuously comprehensible,<a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/barbarous-initium-mors-review/#fn-221993-6" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">6</a> which is refreshing for extreme gutturals. While I initially noted his gurgles as monotonous, over repeated listens, I’ve come to appreciate LaBerge’s nimble work as he juggles spewing growls and coherence.</p><p><em>Initium Mors</em> is a triumphant debut and should appease death metal aficionados without qualification. <strong>Barbarous</strong> is loud, ugly, and here to melt your face in just under half an hour. There’s a lot to like on <em>Initium Mors</em>, even if it’s not breaking any molds. If <strong>Barbarous</strong> can give the mix a bit more room and firmly establish an identity that transcends their influences, their next release could be an absolute banger. Angry Metal Guy<p><a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/incite-savage-new-times-review/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Incite – Savage New Times Review</a></p><p><i>By Steel Druhm</i></p><p><strong>Written By: <span>Nameless_n00b_602</span></strong></p><p>Within metal circles, one does not simply invoke the Cavalera name. Its crest is adorned with more than just the seminal works of <strong>Sepultura</strong>. There is ambition there that does not sleep. That great name is ever pushing boundaries, creating new sounds. This is no barren wasteland riddled with fire and ash and dust. There is no poisonous fume for inspiration to choke on. Not with 10,000 artists could you accomplish what those brothers have done; it is folly. Thus, it is with great interest—and a little skepticism—that I was assigned <strong>Incite</strong>’s seventh LP<em>. </em>Fronted by Max Cavalera’s stepson, Richie Cavalera, <em>Savage New Times</em> promises to be the band’s truest-to-self offering yet. Let’s see how deep the roots go.</p><p>For those unfamiliar, <strong>Incite</strong> majors in groove metal. A familiar southern aggression suffuses Layne Richardson’s axe work and Cavalera’s contentious lyrical delivery. Mid-paced tracks like “Used and Abused” or “Savage New Times” take a cue from <strong>Lamb of God</strong> or <strong>Exhorder</strong>, while rager “No Mercy, No Forgiveness” could easily fit on an early <strong>DevilDriver</strong> record. Bassist EL knows his craft well, building tension and promising violence with well-placed, threatening basslines (“Chucked Off,” “Never Die Once”). The instruments make room in verses for Cavalera’s vocal aggression to brew before crashing together in a choral release, and it is here that drummer Lennon Lopez shines. His energetic drumming steals the spotlight on the choruses of “Used and Abused” and “Chucked Off.” With such strong adherence to the tenets of groove metal, <em>Savage New Times</em> makes it clear that <strong>Incite</strong> has never missed a class at <strong>Pantera</strong>’s <em>Vulgar School</em> <em>of Power.</em></p><p><strong>Incite</strong> meets with mixed success when they venture outside their core sound. Richardson shows real prowess on “Used and Abused,” where he evokes both <strong>Amon Amarth</strong> in the bridge and the spiraling tones of <strong>System of a Down</strong> in the chorus. “Savage New Times” features leads reminiscent of <strong>Cannibal Corpse</strong> in the verse and, like “Feel This Shit (I’m Fired Up),” sports a militant burst fire tempo around the midpoint. On the other hand, “Doubts and the Fear” falters with a murky, pseudo-psychedelic bridge and nasally <strong>Agnostic Front</strong>-tinged vocals. Longest song “Dolores” also struggles. Unlike Phil Anselmo’s softer cleans that match the verses of <strong>Pantera</strong>’s “This Love,” Cavalera barely dulls his edge for the parallel sections of “Dolores,” creating a sonic disconnect between the instruments and himself. This is exacerbated by a similar divide between the rhythm section and the sprawling, idyllic solo recalling “Hotel California.”</p><p></p><p>More generally, <em>Savage New Times</em> suffers from unambitious songwriting. Except for the neoclassical intro of “Chucked Off” and the solo in “Used and Abused,” Richardson’s lead sections feel lethargic and unremarkable. Song structures feature minimal variation and fall into cyclical verse-chorus-verse-chorus patterns. While this isn’t a problem individually, ten songs of it feels repetitive. Additionally, several tracks lack a satisfying conclusion and feel half-baked. “Dolores” ends with a well-performed piano melody, but it feels tacked on after such a strong finish from the band. Similarly, by cutting their outros, “Lies,” “Feel This Shit (I’m Fired Up),” and “No Mercy, No Forgiveness” could have all ended powerfully rather than aimlessly.</p><p>While <em>Savage New Times</em> isn’t a terrible album, because of its deficiencies, I often found myself listening to <strong>Incite</strong>’s influences rather than <strong>Incite</strong> themselves. There’s plenty to critique between unmoving songcraft and mixed experimentation, but the final nail in the coffin is the production.<a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/incite-savage-new-times-review/#fn-220678-1" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">1</a> There’s a slight sibilance and several artifacts throughout <em>Savage New Times</em>. It’s most egregious on “Used and Abused,” ruining one of the record’s best cuts.<a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/incite-savage-new-times-review/#fn-220678-2" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">2</a> This is the common trend of the album—otherwise good tracks flawed by preventable missteps. I’ve spun this record dozens of times, and I’m sure that with more confidence and a clearer vision, <strong>Incite</strong> has a good record in them. <em>Savage New Times</em> just isn’t it.</p><p></p> <p><strong>Rating:</strong> 2.0/5.0<br><strong>DR:</strong> 8 | <strong>Format Reviewed:</strong> 192 kbps mp3<br><strong>Label:</strong> <a href="https://shopus.reigningphoenixmusic.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Reigning Phoenix Music</a><br><strong>Websites:</strong> <a href="http://incite.bandcamp.com/music" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Bandcamp</a> | <a href="https://www.instagram.com/incite_heavymetal/?hl=en" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Instagram</a> | <a href="http://facebook.com/inciteheavymetal" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Facebook</a><br><strong>Releases Worldwide:</strong> August 15th, 2025</p><p><a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/20/" target="_blank">#20</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/2025/" target="_blank">#2025</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/agnostic-front/" target="_blank">#AgnosticFront</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/american-metal/" target="_blank">#AmericanMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/amon-marth/" target="_blank">#AmonMarth</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/aug25/" target="_blank">#Aug25</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/cannibal-corpse/" target="_blank">#CannibalCorpse</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/devildriver/" target="_blank">#DevilDriver</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/exhorder/" target="_blank">#Exhorder</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/groove-metal/" target="_blank">#GrooveMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/heavy-metal/" target="_blank">#HeavyMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/incite/" target="_blank">#Incite</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/lamb-of-god/" target="_blank">#LambOfGod</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/pantera/" target="_blank">#Pantera</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/reigning-phoenix-music/" target="_blank">#ReigningPhoenixMusic</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/review/" target="_blank">#Review</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/reviews/" target="_blank">#Reviews</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/savage-new-times/" target="_blank">#SavageNewTimes</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/sepultura/" target="_blank">#Sepultura</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/system-of-a-down/" target="_blank">#SystemOfADown</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/thrash-metal/" target="_blank">#ThrashMetal</a></p>
Angry Metal Guy<p><a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/retching-charming-the-decomposed-review/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Retching – Charming the Decomposed Review</a></p><p><i>By Saunders</i></p><p>Part of the appeal of my long-standing relationship with death metal is the sheer diversity of the genre and its many sub-genres. There is something for all moods. So while stylistic preferences remain, most forms of death I can happily jam with, whether it be old school primitive clubbings, tech shredding, gnarled dissonance, emotive melodeath, brutal slam, or successful forays of doom, blackened and prog influences into deathly frameworks. But in the end, it’s the genre’s simplified, core values and slimy, grimy atmospheres that warm the heart. Throwing their hats in the old school death revivalist ring, relative newcomers <strong>Retching</strong> explode out the rusty graveyard gates with a no-nonsense, pretension-free blast of old school death. Seeking to add their own spin and identity to separate themselves from the horde of old school aficionados, while leaving reinvention for other folks, the Rhode Island duo unleash debut, <em>Charming the Decomposed</em>. Let us explore whether <strong>Retching</strong> possess the songwriting smarts and tools of destruction to make an impact outside of aping the genre’s proud past.</p><p>Thirty-two minutes is all it takes for <strong>Retching</strong> to deliver eight slashing cuts of riff-driven, blasty, gore-soaked death, American-style. <em>Charming the Decomposed</em> is an old school brawler with a mean streak, chock to breaking point with parasitic grooves, gut-busting riffs, brutal percussive assaults, and appropriately grisly, brutal vocal eruptions. All that said, <em>Charming the Decomposed</em> doesn’t take itself too seriously, loading the rabid, bloodied collection with a variety of part goofy, part unsettling samples, adding to the album atmosphere, even if they are a little overdone at times (see bludgeoning opener “Moonlight Perversions/Gorging on Ecstasy”). Otherwise, efficient, high-energy cuts are the order of the day, drawing influence from the esteemed likes of early <strong>Exhumed</strong>, <strong>Mortician, Carcass</strong> and <strong>Cannibal Corpse</strong>.</p><p>“Shower Curtain Silhouette” builds from a rugged, grinding base, ratcheting up tension before exploding into speedy, punk-infused rampages, stomping verses, and skillfully fluctuating tempo shifts. The deceptive songwriting diversity poking through the muck and feral abuse adds a layer of intrigue to otherwise more traditional, blunt force beatings, amid a couple of less impactful tunes. Another of the album’s stronger examples, “Septic Entombment,” features a creative arrangement, allowing breathing space for the meaty, yet wickedly infectious riffs and bouncing grooves to ride shotgun with aggressive, blast-riddled surges. <strong>Retching</strong> operates effectively in high-speed savagery, yet the writing tends to appeal most when mixed with slower, malevolent tempos, lending a doomy, leaden weight to proceedings, such as the tormenting melodies and ominous vibes emanating from “Fetid Abattoir.”</p><p></p><p>Energy rarely drops, as brutality and raw-boned explosions of speed and blast-riddled mayhem ensue. <strong>Retching</strong> wisely integrate structural and tempo variety, coupled with razor-fine slivers of melody and raucous, crunchy riffs to stave off monotony and lend the album an infectiously headbangable streak. Along with the aforementioned tunes, this is further highlighted on the brooding, ominous swagger of ‘Vulgar Celluloid Trophy”. The anonymous duo of Latex (drums, vox) and Mondo (guitars) forge a powerhouse combo, perfectly suited to the lean, mean, and cutthroat nature of the album’s tight construction. Latex whips together a punchy, inventive performance behind the kit, proving adept at deploying slower, groovier rhythms and finesse to go with the rip-snorting blasts and thrashy tempos. His serviceable vocals get the job done, adding a gritty, guttural edge. Meanwhile, partner in crime Mondo serves up an unhealthy dose of meaty, genuinely catchy riffs, which, if maintained consistently across the album, may have elevated a solid experience into something more substantial. Still, there is some excellent axework and riffs to sink into.</p><p><strong>Retching</strong>’s impressively no-nonsense debut won’t challenge the upper tier of death metal albums in 2025 or threaten many year-end lists. But what it does, it does well, with a no-fuss, belligerent charm that is easy to like. While there is little fat or unnecessary bloat to be found, the songwriting has room for improvement to live up to the quality of the album’s stronger cuts and create a more consistent, compelling listen. However, signs are bright and the potential promising for <strong>Retching</strong> to build something more formidable down the track.</p><p></p> <p><strong>Rating: </strong>3.0/5.0<br><strong>DR:</strong> 6 | <strong>Format Reviewed:</strong> 320 kb/s mp3<br><strong>Label:</strong> <a href="https://tometal.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Transcending Obscurity Records</a><br><strong>Website:</strong> <a href="https://retching-label.bandcamp.com/album/charming-the-decomposed" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Bandcamp</a><br><strong>Releases Worldwide:</strong> August 22nd, 2025</p><p><a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/2025/" target="_blank">#2025</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/30/" target="_blank">#30</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/american-metal/" target="_blank">#AmericanMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/cannibal-corpse/" target="_blank">#CannibalCorpse</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/charming-the-decomposed/" target="_blank">#CharmingTheDecomposed</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/death-metal/" target="_blank">#DeathMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/exhumed/" target="_blank">#Exhumed</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/mortician/" target="_blank">#Mortician</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/old-school-death-metal/" target="_blank">#OldSchoolDeathMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/retching/" target="_blank">#Retching</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/review/" target="_blank">#Review</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/reviews/" target="_blank">#Reviews</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/transcending-obscurity-records/" target="_blank">#TranscendingObscurityRecords</a></p>
Angry Metal Guy<p><a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/castrator-coronation-of-the-grotesque-review/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Castrator – Coronation of the Grotesque Review</a></p><p><i>By Tyme</i></p><p>With <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burdizzo" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Burdizzo</a>‘s ready, New York’s female death metal foursome <strong>Castrator</strong> are back to crush spermatic cords and eviscerate eardrums with their second album, <em>Coronation of the Grotesque</em>. Despite forming in 2013, <strong>Castrator</strong> didn’t release <em>Defiled in Oblivion</em> until 2022, that debut finding its way into the hairy palms and ears of our very own, stun baton-wielding overlord<span><strong> Steel</strong></span>, who gave it a respectable 3.0/5.0. While founding drummer Carolina Peréz (<a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/hypoxia-defiance-things-you-might-have-missed-2024/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><strong>Hypoxia</strong></a>, <a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/ava-mendoza-gabby-fluke-mogul-carolina-perez-mama-killa-review/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><em>Mama Killa</em></a>), bassist Robin Mazen (<strong>Derkéta</strong>, <strong>Gruesome</strong>), and <em>Defiled in Oblivion</em> vocalist Clarissa Badini (<strong>Vicious Blade</strong>)<a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/castrator-coronation-of-the-grotesque-review/#fn-220359-1" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">1</a> return for another go-round, guitarist Kimberly Orellana, lauded by <span><strong>Steel</strong></span> as one of Castrator’s biggest assets, was replaced by Sara Loerlein from <a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/the-breathing-process-labyrinthian-review/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><strong>The Breathing Process</strong></a>. With some concern about the impact this lineup change would have, I soldiered on to determine if<em> Coronation of the Grotesque</em> finds <strong>Castrator</strong> at their most vicious, or serves as a signal this beast needs spayed.</p><p>Clinging to many of the ’80s and ’90s death metal tropes that fueled the fires of their debut, <strong>Castrator</strong> didn’t steer <em>Coronation of the Grotesque</em> into any new, uncharted territory. Still sonically sliced from the same loins as <strong>Cannibal Corpse</strong>, <strong>Deicide</strong>, and <strong>Morbid Angel</strong>, the formula repeats as bludgeoning bass lines and battering ram drumming set the boundaries within which all the brutal riffs, shredding solos, chugging breakdowns, and bestial vocals do their work—standard fare, yes, but excellently executed. Within seconds of the opening throat punch that is “Fragments of Defiance,” a barbarous ballbuster full of powerhouse riffage and lots of Rick Rozz-inspired whammy dives, it’s apparent that <strong>Castrator</strong> has upped their game. Clarissa Badini, in particular, has further refined her technique, inflections of David Vincent and traces of Glen Benton intact; her gutturals are even more rib-rattling, and when positioned against or layered under her higher-pitched raspy screams, the effect is absolute devastation. Bucking the predominantly masculine milieu in which they operate, <strong>Castrator</strong> continues their march toward the death metal elite, and <em>Coronation of the Grotesque</em> is the staircase they ascend.</p><p></p><p>From performance to production, each aspect of <em>Coronation of the Grotesque</em> improves on <strong>Castrator</strong>’s past. As good as Orellana was on <em>Defiled in Oblivion</em>, Sara Loerlein completely shreds her way through <em>Coronation of the Grotesque</em>’s thirty-seven-minute runtime. From the frenzied, dissonant leads and <strong>Deicide</strong>-ic chugs of “I Am Eunuch” to the thrashy, speedy riffs and <strong>Celtic Frost</strong>-ian breakdowns of “Deviant Miscreant,” Loerlein proves an upgrade, and her soloing, whether melodically melancholic (“Remnants of Chaos”) or full-on fretboard furious (“Blood Bind’s Curse,” “Mortem Opeterie”), is excellent. Spotlighted in its space by Noah Buchanan’s great production work, which also manages to bring more power to Pérez’s drums and allows Manzen’s bass work to shine through in a way it never did on Defiled in Oblivion. <strong>Castrator</strong> infused <em>Coronation of the Grotesque</em> with an altogether better flow as well, filled with stronger songwriting.</p><p></p><p>From the tragic, ruthless killing of Mahsa Amini to the abhorrent deeds of predator Naasón Joaquín García (“Covenant of Deceit”) and the ancient Sumerian eunuchization of males meant for slavery and servitude (“I Am Eunuch”), <strong>Castrator</strong> forgoes pedestrian blood-n-guts to focus more on the societal ills of injustice and human suffering, which adds a layer of gravitas and intelligence to the proceedings. <em>Coronation of the Grotesque</em> packs a walloping punch, and my quibbles with it are few, my biggest being what seems to be <strong>Castrator</strong>’s habit of tacking a cover song on the end of their albums. <em>Defiled in Oblivion</em>’s version of “Countess Bathory” was fine but unnecessary, as too is the superfluous inclusion of<strong> Castrator</strong>’s version of <strong>Exodus</strong>’ excellent “Metal Command” here. I didn’t find it engaging at all, and it diminished what could have been a more visceral conclusion had “Discordant Rumination,” with its final bits sounding reminiscent of the mid-section in <strong>Pantera</strong>’s “Strength Beyond Strength,” ushered things to a close.</p><p>I walked away from <em>Coronation of the Grotesque</em> with the same “Fuck yah!” feeling I had when watching that scene from <em>G.I. Jane</em>, when a bloodied and beaten Demi Moore raises her battered head to scream “Suck my dick!” at her domineering master chief. <strong>Castrator</strong> are legit, no doubt, and their excellence shouldn’t be any more impressive because they’re all female, but it is, and I am here for it. If you liked <em>Defiled in Oblivion</em>, you’ll love this. If you’re hearing about <strong>Castrator</strong> for the first time, <em>Coronation of the Grotesque</em> is definitely worth spinning. I can’t wait to see what they do next.</p> <p><strong>Rating</strong>: 3.5/5.0<br><strong>DR</strong>: 7 | <strong>Format Reviewed</strong>: 320kbps mp3<br><strong>Label</strong>:<a href="https://www.darkdescentrecords.com/shop/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"> Dark Descent Records</a><br><strong>Websites</strong>: <a href="https://darkdescentrecords.bandcamp.com/album/coronation-of-the-grotesque" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Bandcamp</a> | <a href="https://www.facebook.com/CastratorBand/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Facebook</a><br><strong>Releases Worldwide</strong>: August 15th, 2025</p><p><a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/2025/" target="_blank">#2025</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/35/" target="_blank">#35</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/aug25/" target="_blank">#Aug25</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/cannibal-corpse/" target="_blank">#CannibalCorpse</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/castrator/" target="_blank">#Castrator</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/coronation-of-the-grotesque/" target="_blank">#CoronationOfTheGrotesque</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/dark-descent-records/" target="_blank">#DarkDescentRecords</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/death-metal/" target="_blank">#DeathMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/deicide/" target="_blank">#Deicide</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/morbid-angeldeath-metal/" target="_blank">#MorbidAngelDeathMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/new-york-death-metal/" target="_blank">#NewYorkDeathMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/review/" target="_blank">#Review</a></p>
Angry Metal Guy<p><a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/viogression-thaumaturgic-veil-review/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Viogression – Thaumaturgic Veil Review</a></p><p><i>By Angry Metal Guy</i></p><p><strong><strong>By: <span>Nameless_n00b_602</span></strong></strong></p><p></p><p>For every well-known, successful band, countless similar acts haven’t caught the same break or enjoyed the same recognition.<a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/viogression-thaumaturgic-veil-review/#fn-219225-1" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">1</a> For every <strong>Thou</strong>, there’s an <strong>Indian</strong>; every <strong>Abigail Williams</strong>, a <strong>Crepuscle</strong>; and every <strong>Obituary</strong>, a <strong>Viogression</strong>. One of the original but unsung stalwarts of death metal’s earliest days, <strong>Viogression</strong> formed in 1988 and released a well-received debut, <em>Expound &amp; Exhort</em>, in 1991. The 1992 follow-up, <em>Passage</em>, failed to meet expectations, leading the band to take a three-decade hiatus. Their third full-length, 2022’s <em>3rd Stage of Decay</em>, was praised for its old-school core and modern flair. Three years and a major lineup shuffle later, they return with their fourth full-length and first self-release, <em>Thaumaturgic Veil</em>. Promising a transcendent discourse on the interconnectivity of infinity and individuality, can this new version of <strong>Viogression</strong> maintain its momentum and deliver?</p><p>Like the good doctor, Vickie Franks, <strong>Viogression</strong> stitches together the genre’s most recognizable touchstones, but parts of themselves peek through, distinct from their influences. Sole remaining founder and vocalist, Brian DeNeffe, exhumes <strong>Obituary </strong>and <strong>Pestilence</strong> for his unintelligible rasps and howls, but employs impressive gutturals and layered screams of his own on “Vulnus Sclopetarium” and “Summon.” Guitarists Lief Larson and Johnathon Ibarra evoke the doomy vibe and disorienting, whip-crack tempo shifts of <strong>Autopsy</strong> and <strong>Asphyx </strong>(“Jinx,” “Light Extinguisher”), but the western dust on “Superposition” belongs to <strong>Viogression</strong> alone. An uncharacteristically twangy chorus and heavy distortion build an atmosphere for a clean, soulful guitar to cut through. Larson, Ibarra, and drummer Erik Schultek halve and double their tempos on “Renumeration” to create a pace both consistent and in flux. Punky album high point, “Pummeled,” sees DeNeffe acting as a rare counterpoint for a jazz-infused solo.<a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/viogression-thaumaturgic-veil-review/#fn-219225-2" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">2</a> These moments showcase the band’s excellent synthesis of influence and individuality when the stitches hold and the heart pumps strongly.</p><p></p><p>But the stitches don’t always hold; <em>Thaumaturgic Veil </em>suffers from indiscretionary inclusion, or poor compositional choices. Bassist Jason Hellman provides <strong>Cannibal Corpse</strong>-esque hooks (“Jinx,” “Travesty öv Darkness”) and a palpable heft to the album, but his performance often feels like parody. The opening basslines of “Superposition” and “As the Light Fades” plod and meander in ways that recall the tongue-in-cheek parts of <strong>Green Day</strong>’s catalogue. A recurring nasally guitar tone tries to instill unease but is instead repetitive and annoying (“Jinx,” “As the Light Fades”). “Eaten by Flies” invokes Polka and, like “Superposition” and “Summon,” is paratactical in its lyrical delivery, imitating amateur slam poetry. This disharmonious construction hamstrings <strong>Viogression</strong>’s ability to cultivate the philosophical and contemplative tone their subject matter requires.</p><p>Even with more consistent songwriting, <em>Thaumaturgic Veil</em> would still feel stitched together and disjointed. The album presents less as a coherent work and more as a series of vignettes. Each proper track (save closer, “Light Extinguisher”) is paired with an intro, giving the sensation of moving from painting to painting in a gallery rather than viewing one grand tapestry. It’s an interesting idea, but it fails for three reasons. First, these intros don’t bleed into their songs. I struggled to find a correlation in these pairings, whether musically, thematically, or lyrically. Second, without stronger connective tissue, these intros only add bloat to a relatively lean record.<a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/viogression-thaumaturgic-veil-review/#fn-219225-3" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">3</a> Third, and most damning, they prohibit the listener from building any momentum throughout <em>Thaumaturgic Veil</em>. This start-stop-start-stop structure makes the album feel twice as long as it is and turns every spin into a test of endurance.</p><p>While I can applaud the ambition of <em>Thaumaturgic Veil</em>, the execution ultimately falls short. “Pummeled,” “Renumeration,” and “Vulnus Sclopetarium” show that <strong>Viogression</strong> has the chops to write and perform a great, concise album, but uneven songwriting quality and an interrupted flow mar what could have been a prime offering from the old guard. Either of these flaws in isolation would have been manageable, but taken together, their impact compounds. There’s potential here, and with tighter threading and a more cohesive structure, I have no doubt<strong> Viogression</strong> could achieve the recognition they deserve.</p><p></p> <p><strong>Rating:</strong> 2.0/5.0<br><strong>DR:</strong> 5 | <strong>Format Reviewed:</strong> 320 kb/s mp3<br><strong>Label:</strong> Self-Released<br><strong>Websites:</strong> <a href="http://viogression.info" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">viogression.info</a> | <a href="https://viogressionr.bandcamp.com/album/expound-and-exhort" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Bandcamp</a> | <a href="https://www.instagram.com/viogressionofficial/?hl=en" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Instagram</a> | <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Viogression/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Facebook </a><br><strong>Releases Worldwide:</strong> July 11th, 2025</p><p><a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/20/" target="_blank">#20</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/2025/" target="_blank">#2025</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/abigail-williams/" target="_blank">#AbigailWilliams</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/asphyx/" target="_blank">#Asphyx</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/autopsy/" target="_blank">#Autopsy</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/autospy/" target="_blank">#Autospy</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/cannibal-coprse/" target="_blank">#CannibalCoprse</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/cannibal-corpse/" target="_blank">#CannibalCorpse</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/crepuscle/" target="_blank">#Crepuscle</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/death-metal/" target="_blank">#DeathMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/green-day/" target="_blank">#GreenDay</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/independent/" target="_blank">#Independent</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/indian/" target="_blank">#Indian</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/jul25/" target="_blank">#Jul25</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/obituary/" target="_blank">#Obituary</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/pestilence/" target="_blank">#Pestilence</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/review/" target="_blank">#Review</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/reviews/" target="_blank">#Reviews</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/self-release/" target="_blank">#SelfRelease</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/thaumaturgic-veil/" target="_blank">#ThaumaturgicVeil</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/viogression/" target="_blank">#Viogression</a></p>
Angry Metal Guy<p><a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/harvested-dysthymia-review/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Harvested – Dysthymia Review</a></p><p><i>By Tyme</i></p><p>Despite a waning stigma, mental illness remains an oft-closeted topic, as those suffering from it struggle not only to cope but to discuss their struggles with others. Here to shed some of their death metal light on the matter are Canadian upstarts <strong>Harvested</strong>, with their independent debut full-length <em>Dysthymia</em>, which, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine, is defined as a long-lasting form of mild depression. Touching on topics ranging from submitting to one’s long-bottled-up ‘shadow self’ (“Repressed Neurosis”) to the gluttonous way humans abuse the earth (“Unanchored”), something <strong>Harvested</strong> consider a <em>form</em> of mental illness, they’ve dialed back the lyrically gorier aspects of their eponymous 2022 EP to intensify the focus on their chosen theme. As evidenced by the beautifully rendered CJ Bertram cover art, which main guitarist Mitchi Dimitriadis says depicts ‘an individual in great mental turmoil’ and represents ‘the abstract visualization of the chaos that is the human brain,’ it’s clear that <strong>Harvested</strong> are committed to the subject. The only question left to answer is whether it’s worth reaping what <strong>Harvested</strong>’s <em>Dysthymia</em> hopes to have sown.</p><p>Nostalgically anchored in 1990s and early 2000s death metal, <strong>Harvested</strong> also incorporate modern elements of slam and tech-death into the mix to achieve <em>Dysthymia</em>’s goal. This is one brutal fucking record, and from the get, you realize Harvested aren’t messing about, as <em>Dysthymia</em> mashes the potatoes and pulls the meaty steaks off the grill, a muscle-bound manifestation of their <strong>Cannibal Corpse</strong>, <strong>Suffocation</strong>, and<strong> Deicide</strong> (“Harvested,” “The Infestation”) influences. Dimitriadis’ and Vitto Oh’s guitar harmonics are pinched harder than <span><strong>Grier</strong></span>‘s butt cheeks at an enema convention, ensorcelled by viscerally blistering riffs, technically proficient leads, and tornadic, swirling solos. Jacob Collins’ drums<a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/harvested-dysthymia-review/#fn-220096-1" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">1</a> crack skulls and pummel sternums with whirling fills and destructive double-kicks while Eric Forget’s bass lines remember everything necessary to keep things rumbling along. Adam Semler’s vocals, primarily an homage to George Fisher’s chesty aggression and Glenn Benton’s demonic discernibility, also share elements with <strong>Cattle Decapitation</strong>’s Travis Ryan at his most high-pitched and raspy. For such a young band, <strong>Harvested</strong> have planted a flag on the death metal scene, and <em>Dysthymia</em> is the wind through which that flag furls, filled with exuberant, energy-filled performances and solid songwriting.</p><p></p><p>With highlights aplenty, <em>Dysthymia</em> demands attention by way of its genuine songcraft and near flawless execution. I found myself stank-faced and sweaty through many a listen, whether basking in the glow of galloping riffs and percussive bass on “Unending Madness” or taking in the detailed technicality of the <strong>Soreption</strong> and <strong>The Zenith Passage</strong> influenced “Designed Dilemma,” a song that chugs so hard through its last ninety seconds I nearly gave myself whiplash. My favorite track, “Gathered and Deluded,” is a <strong>Cattle Decapitation</strong>-tinted slammer with pinched harmonic progressions that have been living rent-free in my head for weeks as Forget’s bass marches in flurrying lockstep with Collins’ robotically precise drums, and Selmer channels his best inner Travis Ryan. <strong>Harvested</strong> is one tight-knit outfit, belying their relatively brief existence and sounding like a band that’s been together much longer.</p><p></p><p>I’d argue the efforts of <strong>Harvested</strong>’s “sixth member”<strong> </strong>deserve as much credit for the success <em>Dysthymia</em> should garner as the band themselves, and that is the excellent work Joe Lyko performed from the booth at Darkmoon Productions. Lyko’s mix and master slathers Dimitriadis’ and Oh’s guitar work in a tone that, for me, defies obvious comparison, as bright and bouncy as it is deadly and devastating. Like a calculated throat punch, it was the first thing that hit me when album opener, “Harvested,” launched, holding my rapt attention all the way through to “The Infestation,” an excellent close to <em>Dysthymia</em>’s very manageable thirty-two-minute runtime. Each instrument exists within its own space, breathing freely and intertwining with high-definition clarity, thereby topping this auditorily successful sundae with a big, fat, juicy cherry.</p><p>Lyrically poignant, brutally heavy, and bursting with engagingly twisted, hook-filled instrumentation, <em>Dysthymia</em> is a helluva debut, and one <strong>Harvested</strong> should be proud of. As poetically as I have waxed, I still believe there’s room for <strong>Harvested</strong> to grow. God help those who might lay their ears on a sophomore effort from this line-up, should they remain intact. Rest assured, I’ll definitely be watching and waiting. For now, however, I wholeheartedly recommend you spend some long-lasting, quality time with <em>Dysthymia</em>.</p> <p><strong>Rating</strong>: 3.5 / 5.0<br><strong>DR</strong>: 7 | <strong>Format Reviewed</strong>: 320kbps mp3<br><strong>Label</strong>: Self-Released<br><strong>Websites</strong>: <a href="https://harvested.bandcamp.com/album/dysthymia" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Bandcamp</a> | <a href="https://www.facebook.com/harvested666/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Facebook</a> | <a href="https://www.instagram.com/harvestedband/?hl=en" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Instagram </a><br><strong>Releases Worldwide</strong>: August 1st, 2025</p><p><a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/2025/" target="_blank">#2025</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/35/" target="_blank">#35</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/aug25/" target="_blank">#Aug25</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/canadian-metal/" target="_blank">#CanadianMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/cannibal-corpse/" target="_blank">#CannibalCorpse</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/cattle-decapitation/" target="_blank">#CattleDecapitation</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/death-metal/" target="_blank">#DeathMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/deicide/" target="_blank">#Deicide</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/dysthymia/" target="_blank">#Dysthymia</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/harvested/" target="_blank">#Harvested</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/independent/" target="_blank">#Independent</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/review/" target="_blank">#Review</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/soreption/" target="_blank">#Soreption</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/suffocation/" target="_blank">#Suffocation</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/technical-death-metal/" target="_blank">#TechnicalDeathMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/the-zenith-process/" target="_blank">#TheZenithProcess</a></p>

Like part of me wants to go full on cyberpunk/vaporwave with a bunch of led strips and futuristic designs but the other part wants sleek and crisp elegant type stuff. Then there’s still the sports side of me and of course the video game/nerdy side of me. I wonder how I can marry all of this together without it looking like it was designed by 4 different people 😂</p><p>Oh and it all has to go well with my one thing I have on the walls already which is a one off poster from a <a href="https://gamerstavern.online/tags/CannibalCorpse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CannibalCorpse</span></a> show 🤷🏻‍♂️</p>

Angry Metal Guy<p><a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/cordyceps-hell-inside-review/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Cordyceps – Hell Inside Review</a></p><p><i>By Angry Metal Guy</i></p><p><strong><strong>Written By:</strong> <span><strong>Nameless-N00b_604</strong></span></strong></p><p>Artists don’t necessarily need to draw deep from their inner lives to make enjoyable art, but they do to make great art. Denver, Colorado’s <strong>Cordyceps</strong>—whose debut EP drew acclaim from the late, great Trevor Strnad—have dug deep on their sophomore album <em>Hell Inside</em> and dredged up something nasty. A meditation on struggle, pain, and <a href="https://capitalchaostv.com/2025/06/24/channeling-chaos-cordyceps-rafael-gonzalez-on-trauma-transformation-and-the-brutality-of-hell-inside/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">the time an ex-friend stabbed vocalist Rafael Gonzalez three times in the chest</a>, <em>Hell Inside </em>portrays the tortured psyche by way of a metaphorical <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cordyceps" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">cordyceps fungus</a> infecting and ravaging the mind. <strong>Cordyceps </strong>have done the soul searching needed for something special. But is it something special?</p><p>The title <em>Hell Inside </em>isn’t only a declaration of the album’s themes: it’s also an apt description. Paces shift frenziedly on “Filth” and “I Am Hate” while riffs chug and squeal on “Obliterate” and “Flock of Sheep.” <em>Hell Inside</em>’s guitar solos evoke <strong>Slayer </strong>with DeLorean Nero’s dive-happy antics (“Murder All,” “Flock of Sheep”) while drummer Michael Nolan commits percussion abuse with concussive and groovy octopus-handed drum fills. Meanwhile, bassist Chris Rosset brings a clicky, bludgeoning <strong>Cannibal Corpse</strong>-like tone and aggression throughout the runtime. Though death metal to the core, <em>Hell Inside </em>emits the occasional whiffs of thrash (“Flock of Sheep,”) doom (“Diseased Mind”), and even a little <strong>Pantera</strong>esque groove metal qualities (“I Am the Plague”) to stir up the mix. Much of <em>Hell Inside</em>’s appeal is that – bear with me – of deathcore, reveling in ridiculously down-tuned riffs, start-stop rhythms, and brown-note vocals. But <strong>Cordyceps </strong>isn’t beholden to deathcore’s reliance on breakdowns and instead fuels their pandemonium with a near-relentless fervor at times reminiscent of <strong>Ascended Dead</strong>’s <a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/ascended-dead-evenfall-of-the-apocalypse-review/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><em>Evenfall of the Apocalypse</em></a>. Instrumentally, <em>Hell Inside</em> possesses the callousness of industrial machinery biting through fingers and is sure to nuke any unprepared listeners into fine assdust.<a href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/cordyceps-hell-inside-review/#fn-220060-1" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">1</a></p><p></p><p>But where <strong>Cordyceps</strong>’ vulnerability – their volatility – originates is Gonzalez’s vocals, the easy highlight of <em>Hell Inside</em>. He hardly sounds human, spitting wet, unhinged gurgles that at times sound like Lovecraftian squid-men (“Diseased Mind”), dying animals (“Obliterate”), <strong>Afterbirth</strong>’s Will Smith (“Regret”), and, at 2:14 in “Obliterate,” the nightmare echoes from the truck stop toilet bowl of Hell. But there’s a technicality behind Gonzalez’s vocals, too: see the obscene low notes of “Diseased Mind” or the twenty-six-second run in “Obliterate” taken in what sounds like one breath. Through it all, Gonzalez seems to muster every negative thought he’s ever had, evoking feelings of inner turmoil, misanthropy, and betrayal in manners both disturbing and cathartic. In short, Gonzalez’s vocals are the lifeblood in <strong>Cordyceps</strong>’ candidemia-ridden arteries.</p><p>The blood runs somewhat cold, however, when crafting standout moments. No song is a stinker, and runtimes never drag, but the formula of chug-chug-trem-GUUUUUURGLE dilutes eventually. While the closer “Regret” is as good as the opener “Filth” in a vacuum, it’s not as engaging forty minutes later. The band also over-employs start-stop breaks to transition between movements, which are effective on early tracks like “Filth” but become predictable with overuse. The few atmospheric bookends on <em>Hell Inside</em>, like the piano-closing “Suffocating,” feel superfluous. Rather than merging one novel idea with another, they just bridge one onslaught of death metal to the next. Generously, they can be seen as breaks for your ears, an unfortunate necessity given the album’s strident, undynamic mix. It’s got its memorable moments – the singular synth tone in “Diseased Mind,” Gonzalez’s declaration that he’s “<em>GONNA BLOW</em> [his] <em>FUCKING BRAINS OUT</em>” in “Murder All” and the aforementioned toilet deluge from “Obliterate” – but <strong>Cordyceps </strong>found something good on <em>Hell Inside </em>and perhaps did too much of it.</p><p></p><p><em>Hell Inside </em>is a buckshot to the brain of visceral death goodness, an unbending divulsion into mankind’s worst tendencies. Though I don’t think it’ll draw in many who aren’t already sold on brutal death metal, its fans are sure to embrace this entry into the subgenre. Monotony issues notwithstanding, <em>Hell Inside</em> is a twistedly fun listen, and hopefully <strong>Cordyceps </strong>will one day take the rage and talent they brought here and turn it into something even more adventurous and memorable that’ll grow fungi in my brain. After what they did in there already, there’s room enough for a new growth.</p> <p><strong>Rating</strong>: Good<br><strong>DR</strong>: 5 | <strong>Review Format</strong>: V0 MP3<br><strong>Label</strong>: <a href="https://www.uniqueleader.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Unique Leader Records</a><br><strong>Website</strong>: <a href="https://uniqueleaderrecords.bandcamp.com/album/hell-inside" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">uniqueleaderrecords.bandcamp.com</a> | <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Cordycepslv/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">facebook.com/cordycepslv</a> | <a href="https://www.instagram.com/cordycepslv" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Instagram.com/cordycepslv</a><br><strong>Release Date</strong>: July 25, 2025</p><p><a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/2025/" target="_blank">#2025</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/30/" target="_blank">#30</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/afterbirth/" target="_blank">#Afterbirth</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/ascended-dead/" target="_blank">#AscendedDead</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/brutal-death-metal/" target="_blank">#BrutalDeathMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/cannibal-corpse/" target="_blank">#CannibalCorpse</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/cordyceps/" target="_blank">#Cordyceps</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/death-metal/" target="_blank">#DeathMetal</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/evenfall/" target="_blank">#Evenfall</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/hell-inside/" target="_blank">#HellInside</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/jul25/" target="_blank">#Jul25</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/pantera/" target="_blank">#Pantera</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/review/" target="_blank">#Review</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/reviews/" target="_blank">#Reviews</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/trevor-strnad/" target="_blank">#TrevorStrnad</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.angrymetalguy.com/tag/unique-leader-records/" target="_blank">#UniqueLeaderRecords</a></p>
