"[Dr. Flatt's] work focuses on military veterans & & LGBTQ+ #veterans & their risks of Alzheimer’s & #dementia & the obstacles #caregivers face in providing resources & care." How cutting funding for #Alzheimer's research (& #cancer & all the other #NIH/#NSF cuts) helps anyone/improves government efficiency is beyond my ken. It doesn't of course. It's an attempt to bring us to our knees. Let's not bend.

Good news / bad news

Good news! 🐕 Dogs can be trained to sniff out many diseases, as shown years ago but hey now it's in the news again! goodnewsnetwork.org/dogs-in-uk

Bad news! Now that it's been proven to be very cheap and highly effective, it will be ignored as a useful tech, as happened with the last diseases dogs were trained to detect.

(COVID-sniffing dogs at workplaces, schools and border crossings! They could be the fluffiest of swiss cheese layers!! 🐶 )

Good News Network · Dogs in UK Are First to Be Trained to Sniff Out Bowel Cancer–After Nailing Parkinson’s and COVIDMedical Detection Dogs are the first in the UK to be trained to sniff out bowel cancer tumors by smelling urine in groundbreaking 2024 study.

This is how you prevent cancer (one kind, at least):

"Cervical cancer incidence rates decreased by more than half from the mid-1970s to the mid-2000s, largely because of the increased use of screening, but they have stabilized over the past decade. In women ages 30 to 44, however, rates have increased 1.7% each year from 2012 to 2019.

"In contrast, rates declined 11% each year for women ages 20 to 24, probably reflecting the first signs of cancer prevention from HPV vaccination."

This study used the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) to evaluate combinations of screening strategies for identifying Barrett's esophagus (BE) in the community, taking into account costs of sampling devices and prevalence of BE. Their main finding was that costs per BE case identified are minimized when using a weighted risk stratification model followed by less-invasive devices like the Cytosponge and then endoscopy.

ESOCAN News · Cost-effectiveness analysis of Barrett's screeningFrom South Australia's Flinders University, Dr. Aoki and colleagues report on a cost-effectiveness analysis of various screening strategies for identifying Barrett's esophagus (BE) in the community, The study examined four primary screening tools: non-weighted clinical risk stratification, weighted risk stratification, the Cytosponge-TFF3 device, and traditional endoscopy and analyzed two hypothetical

When I faced #cancer, I learned about the limits of my control. I followed a trail, I did not blaze it. I was aware to see paths that diverged and squinted at hard to see markers. It began my lessons in both being an active participant and accepting what was.

Now, we all face a similar challenge.

We do not control the now we all face and we aren’t passive stones dragged by a torrent of water down a hill. We can act and protect each other without grasping at dreams or ignoring our power.

It’s hard and not a straight path. Kindling hope and breathing community is a practice I do daily or hourly

We know physical activity is good for physical health, mental health and longevity. A new study suggests one specific benefit of #fitness, among many: better outcomes later on should you be diagnosed with #cancer. The finding builds upon many others that make a powerful case for #exercise as a strong immune system booster and a preventive activity.
