@mklopez

Thanks for the heads up!!

For almost all of us who missed it, SurrealEstate S3 premieres today at 10 pm EDT in North America.

It’s a great little spooky sci-fi horror show with a great, diverse cast. Just the quirky Canadian thing to wryly lighten our viewing.

Who starts promoting a season premiere the week it takes place?!!

(No, an ‘AOL exclusive’ and a Syfy blog page a month ahead isn’t getting the word out.)

I’ve been waiting for this for a year with no updates from either CTV or Syfy. One would think they wished the show would fail…

But it shouldn’t. It deserves all its viewership and fans in North America, Latin America and Europe.

That’s a lot of Trek! I have watched it all as it came out with the exception of a few episodes in 1966 before the neighbour kid pushed me to try it in TOS season one. So, I am always impressed by younger newcomers who systematically binge to catch up.

Understand your love of ‘The Magicians’.

I’d like to recommend however that you give ‘The Ark’ a try if you haven’t been already. Its second season finale just ran on Syfy US last week, and will be on Peacock as of this week. ‘The Ark’ is a Dean Devlin creation that appeals to a lot of Star Trek, Stargate and classic sci-fi television fans. Like 90s Star Trek, it’s getting better as it goes on. Hopefully, it will be renewed for more seasons.

Outside the US, it’s available in many countries but across a diversity of services. Check out the hashtags below to see if you might have it.

I am in the process of setting up a new group chat bot account for ‘The Ark’ that interested people in the fediverse will be able to follow.

There’s also interest in a group rewatch/watch and discussion here. I’ll be setting up a schedule in a few weeks. Input will be welcome!

“Why do we like it so much? The Ark Podcast” ?!!

This sounds like it might have a future 😅 :packetcat_wink:

“Why and how is it surviving when other low budget sci-fi shows are not?” might be the best question — and other than my personal effort here to amplify and get some momentum with Star Trek and Stargate fandom, what’s getting traction?

Perhaps it’s the unrepentant cheesiness of Dr Who, as some have claimed. (Not enough of a a Whovian to catch the homages that others are seeing.)

So far, all I see for podcasting about the show is coverage on the general SyFy podcast. So, any live watch posts here are likely novel content.

But other than a few countries, the distribution outside the US is spread across a plethora of smaller linear and streaming services. In addition to ones I’ve noted already, it’s on Binge in Australia, Sky in Ireland and Switzerland, Universal-Prime in France, M+ in Spain, Canal+ in Austria, and BluTV in Turkey.

Clearly, the younger but dedicated fandom for ‘The Ark’ is talking about it elsewhere and who knows where they’re watching and talking about it. (Not checking for Discord channels, the subreddit has about 2.5K users.). But somehow across all of it, there was enough viewership and fan support to get the show renewed once.

There is a wiki on Fandom but they’re not keeping up with the season 2 releases. the-ark.fandom.com/wiki/The_Ar

The Ark WikiThe ArkThe Ark is a science fiction mystery drama television series created by Dean Devlin who along with Jonathan Glassner are co-showrunners for the series. Season One, consisting of twelve episodes, premiered on Syfy on February 1, 2023. A second season premiered on July 17, 2024. The Earth, mankind's homeworld, is dying. Huge fires burn its surface, resources are scarce, there is no future on the ground, so the survivors search another home into the stars. The Ark Program is the last hope for manki

Why aren’t more Star Trek fans talking about ‘The Ark?’ A genuine question all…

It’s an optimistic, forward-looking diverse ensemble-cast SciFi show that flies impudently in the face of all the trauma-burdened, dystopian big-budget peak-streaming tropes.

Are there really only two of us on Mastodon who watch it?

If so, that likely says more about the older age slant of the demographic here than about the show itself. ‘The Ark’ has a dedicated following of Gen Z and younger Millennial fans.

BUT ‘The Ark’ seems to check off all the boxes on the wish lists of older Sci-Fi TV fans here — Low budget and cheesy vfx included, ‘The Ark’ hits many of the points older SciFi television fans say they are looking for.
