Various Artists, Magnolia Record Club Presents NPR Tiny Desk Concerts, 2022 on Dualtone

Sadly, heard last week Bob Boilen is retiring from NPR Music.

This record collects some strong performances from the Tiny Desk concert series – but really there are so many gems in the series it is just a bit of a taste:

  • The Lumineers – Stubborn Love
  • Brittany Howard – Stay High
  • Black Pumas – Colors
  • Tyler Childers – Lady May
  • The Civil Wars – Barton Hollow
  • Shakey Graves – Only Son
  • Shovels and Rope – Birmingham
  • Kathleen Edwards – Hard on Everyone
  • Daughter – Landfill
  • Yola – I Don’t Wanna Lie

Selections make sense for Magnolia Record Club and fit generally their curation (it was started by Drew Holcombe). Many of their exclusive pressings can also be purchased directly in the Magnolia Record Store – though I don’t think this one is still available.

The name "Doechii" is on everyone's lips right now, thanks to her blinding Tiny Desk performance yesterday (h/t to @miaq for sharing it with us!). Here, the rapper is in conversation with the fearless Brittany Howard for @RollingStone's Musicians on Musicians series. "Since I came into the industry I’m seeing a lot more women in all different positions of the music industry, including recording and touring. And it makes me so happy because when I was younger, there were so many different aspects of music I wanted to do and I kind of talked myself out of it in a way, because I was like, well, the guys aren’t going to let me, whoever’s running the studio, they’re not going to let somebody like me do this," says Howard. "It was kind of like a defeatist attitude because it was just what I had seen. It did feel like a boys’ club. Now it doesn’t feel so much that way anymore."
