Understand your point, but disagree. People have been led to believe that #Bluesky is a safe because the company has marketed that it is "decentralized." Most folks don't really understand this stuff, but are convinced because it is repeated in the media and their associates are doing the same thing.

This is a teachable moment. Hopefully people will see the vulnerability and the inherently more defensible nature of the Fediverse and make decisions accordingly.

Verified reports that #Bluesky is blocking some users in #Turkey as requested by the Turkish government. Reported here sonmuhur.com/blueskyda-ilk-san and explained a little More details on this thread mastodon.social/@mastodonmigra

Question for my fedi friends: what happens here if a government makes these demands on the fediverse? I'm guessing it would be up to each server admin if they chose to follow those government requests, right? Have we seen anything like this happen on Mastodon servers yet?

Bluesky'da ilk sansür! Türkiye'de ilk kez bir hesabın engellendiği ortaya çıktı

#Bluesky remains important and valuable as a tool of political resistance _right now_; nobody should be scolded for using it.

But (there's always a but) the company's willingness to fold quickly to censorship demands from Turkey's government demonstrates that it is not sufficient.

Both the fact that it _can_ appease dictators, and the fact that it _does_ default to this response, show a lack of backbone: both structurally (due to centralization) and ideologically.

"but bro! it's got the decentralization vitamins you crave. trust me, they say they're going to do that someday

and it's a public benefit corporation. what does that mean specifically in legal terms, does that term have any actual binding meaning? no. but it sounds cool!

sure the algorithm can be controlled like dead bird site and amplify plutocrat cult of personality and bigotry, but the crypto bros who own it would never do that!"

"it's a #publicBenefitCorporation"

that has no legal bite

it means a company *may* pursue ill defined "public benefit" instead of profit

it doesn't *have* to

shallow feel good marketing

"it's #decentralized"

in theory

like #cryptocurrency hype, #bluesky promises a lot and delivers little, and #FOMO dum dums buy into the promise rather than the reality

it's only a matter of when, not if, the #crypto bro owners of bluesky do to it what #musk did to #twitter

Implications: Bluesky Blocking Turkish User (7 of 7)

As we go forward, we should take this case very seriously. Right now people all over the world are joining "decentralized" #Bluesky under some misguided belief that it is a digital safe haven. This episode clearly demonstrates that it is not.
