Dave Nanian<p>Lee Morgan - Cornbread</p><p>Given this was recorded in '65, it starts off sounding more "late 60s" to me, for some reason.</p><p>Morgan, here, is joined by Hank Mobley (tenor sax), Herbie Hancock (piano), Jackie McLean (alto sax), Larry Ridley (bass), and Billy Higgins (drums). The set is four Morgan tunes and one standard (Ill Wind). Andi Chorley<p>Fantasias for Guitar and Banjo is the debut album of the folk guitarist Sandy Bull, released in 1963 through Vanguard Records.<br>Recording</p><p>Bull recorded the album accompanied by Billy Higgins, a session jazz drummer who had previously appeared on early Ornette Coleman records.</p><p>The highlight of Fantasias for Guitar and Banjo is usually considered to be its opener "Blend", a lengthy improvisational piece. According to Bull, the ideas behind the piece originated from his admiration of Folkways Records, which documented ethnic music from across the world. He also claimed to being particularly inspired from hearing Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan in New York City.[3] "Blend" has been viewed as a "virtual travelogue of styles done in a then revolutionary modal tuning" - Wikipedia</p><p>ttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3HuHV00DMI&amp;list=PLmP3m-_XsexepmBuq-zSTwkx7SBi9KJCq&amp;index=1</p><p><a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/sandybull" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sandybull</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/billyhiggins" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>billyhiggins</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/worldmusic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>worldmusic</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/vanguardrecords" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vanguardrecords</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/DebutAlbum" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DebutAlbum</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/ragarock" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ragarock</span></a></p>

Frank Schindelbeck<p>Listening to Don Cherry</p><p> A well-meaning friend and music connoisseur knew of course about my weakness for Don Cherry and the CD of "Art Deco" is also in the collection for decades. Now also as vinyl. And I may state once again: what a pleasure to have this beautiful work in the collection. If only because of the beautiful cover in 30x30cm. </p><p><a href="https://troet.cafe/tags/jazz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>jazz</span></a> <a href="https://troet.cafe/tags/vinyl" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vinyl</span></a> <a href="https://troet.cafe/tags/doncherry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>doncherry</span></a> <a href="https://troet.cafe/tags/artdeco" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>artdeco</span></a> <a href="https://troet.cafe/tags/jazzrules" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>jazzrules</span></a> <a href="https://troet.cafe/tags/lp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>lp</span></a> <a href="https://troet.cafe/tags/billyhiggins" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>billyhiggins</span></a> <a href="https://troet.cafe/tags/CharlieHaden" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CharlieHaden</span></a> <a href="https://troet.cafe/tags/JamesClay" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JamesClay</span></a></p>

Igor Olestra<p>I just got Third Set, the third and final installment of the <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/CedarWalton" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CedarWalton</span></a> Quartet's live recordings in Copenhagen for <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/SteeplechaseRecords" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SteeplechaseRecords</span></a> (1983). These guys were at the top of their game, and the recording has so much live presence. The sound is immediate, the performance is full of energy, and the <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/jazz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>jazz</span></a> is top-notch. Walton does precision surgery on the ivories with his performances, all without machines. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/CedarWaltonQuartet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CedarWaltonQuartet</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/BobBerg" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BobBerg</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/SamJones" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SamJones</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/BillyHiggins" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BillyHiggins</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vinyl" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vinyl</span></a> <br><a href="https://youtu.be/s6sb6h5a7-I" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">youtu.be/s6sb6h5a7-I</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
