Can we please stop acting as if federation is a silver bullet. There’s plenty of issues it in fact makes worse and is ill-equipped for. Humans are very dynamic. Federation is not suited for government at least in the US. The country is already divided, in no world would I ever want blue states and red states to be able to defederate each other. There’s also complex dynamics such as family. You don’t want to be on an instance where your family and friends are blocked from communicating with you. It’s also not a perfect solution to host a family & friend instance as a family member or friend can get your instance defederated and you lose connections. For the masses it would be better if it was a centralised service owned by a nonprofit that got popular. This isn’t to say federation is terrible, it’s just not the magical solution I’ve seen it sold as. PS. Stop telling the lie that users “own” their connections. You no more own it here than on Facebook especially considering on Facebook users are likely to know each other in real life. If someone moves to a server they’re unaware is blocked by a server that the majority of their friends are on, those connections are gone. There were several severe miscalculations. People believed we could continue to empower #BigSocial & legacy media without any negative repercussions. People didn’t factor that the country never wants a woman president especially not a Brown one. People miscalculated that women especially white women cared more about women’s right than being told they’re being erased by trans women & that trans girls are ruining their daughters sports. Trump campaign spent millions on anti-trans ads & what was the lefts counter? It was crickets. How often were the left asked what’s a woman? Or it was said by the right that Dems don’t know what a woman is without any pushback. We all miscalculated the human element. Being a r*pist, fascist, bigot etc isn’t harmful anymore, the media & big business have made it so. #Trump appeals to people’s demons to flow freely. Ppl love othering & that’s why minorities could look past the comments as they didn’t see themselves at the end of the threats nor racist comments. Globally conservatism is on the rise the left barely won many of the major elections this year and lost handily in the #USelection people do not care about progressive politics broadly. #uspol

I see people making judgments about those that still remain on #BigSocial those that use “ #AI “ , those that work for #governments those that don’t use #foss etc whatever purity tests you lot have. I don’t respect you people. You’re the same people that have nasty racist, sexist, homophobic family, friends and colleagues that you call “good people” some of you are also these kinds of people yourselves with. The majority of the people you are critical of happen to be marginalised folk. People that don’t have the means, resources, support, time etc to do these things thus “convenience” is a big part of how they survive.

@Ciela I don't entirely agree - an algorithm tries to achieve what it was designed to do. For the #bigsocial sites, the goal is maximum user engagement which translates to (in theory) more impressions on ads, and therefore more revenue. They could just set their algorithms to achieve other goals, they just wouldn't be rewarded for doing so, and so they respond to that stimulus as an organisation. Algorithms aren't inherently bad - choose your own Algo would be interesting for the #fediverse

I've been on #Threads checking in daily. I still find myself coming back to #Mastodon. The absence of user defined content filters is a deal breaker. Not surprised because NO #Meta app has them.

And I get a stream of posts from people with whom I have no connection, socially, or shared interests via followed hashtags.

Mastodon empowers users to control what they see on their feeds more so than the other #BigSocial apps. It is why I come back. #twittermigration #Instagram

For all that is said about how #SocialMedia gave a voice to the maginalised, too many #queer people still weren't really welcome on #BigSocial even before Musk came long.

So they came to the #Fediverse, and built something new, something better. And it's thanks to them that, when the rest of us fled Twitter and Reddit, we found something that was already brilliant.

So this #PrideMonth, let's raise our beverage vessels to the queer people who made the #Fediverse what it is.
