Would you like to work with the #BepiColombo mission that is about to arrive at #Mercury?
#ESA has just put out an announcement for interdisciplinary scientists. The letter of intent deadline to apply is May 20!

Listen to the sound of a flying #space probe!
A bit more than one and a half year, then #BepiColombo will arrive at Mercury. During its flight a special instrument registers all sorts of vibrations: "... fuel is slightly sloshing, the solar panels are vibrating at their natural frequency, heat pipes are pushing vapour through small tubes..."
The collected data was sped up to make it audible: https://dlmultimedia.esa.int/download/public/videos/2025/01/015/2501_015_AR_EN.mp4

#BepiColombo (joint satellite project between the EU and Japan's space agencies) flew by Mercury for the sixth time a few weeks ago #space https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/BepiColombo/Top_three_images_from_BepiColombo_s_sixth_Mercury_flyby
#PPOD: This is one of a series of images taken by the ESA/JAXA #BepiColombo mission on 8 January 2025 as the spacecraft sped by for its sixth and final gravity assist maneuver at the planet. After flying over the planet's north pole, the spacecraft had clear views of #Mercury's sunlit northern hemisphere. The image shows that large regions of Mercury's heavily cratered surface are smoothed over by lava from volcanic eruptions. Credit: ESA/BepiColombo/MTM
#BepiColombo is a joint mission between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to study the planet Mercury.
The mission will perform a comprehensive study of Mercury, including characterization of its magnetic field, magnetosphere, and both interior and surface structure.

#PhotoOfTheDay: Top three images from #BepiColombo's sixth #Mercury flyby
On 8 January 2025, the ESA/JAXA BepiColombo mission flew past Mercury for the sixth time.
The spacecraft flew just a few hundred kilometres above the planet's north pole. Close-up images expose possibly icy craters whose floors are in permanent shadow, and the vast sunlit northern plains.

#BepiColombo flew just 295 km above Mercury's surface on the planet's cold, dark night side. Around seven minutes later, it passed directly over the Mercury's north pole before getting clear views of the planet's sunlit north.
