Plenty of people in these crowds paid attention during the 2014 and 2019/2020 protests in Hong Kong.

If you're going to gear up, any is better than none, and more is usually safer than less against police violence.

A K95 mask is safer than no mask.
A respirator is safer than a K95.
A full-face mask *may*¹ be safer than a respirator.

¹ it is against gas, but it may be more vulnerable to ballistic rounds, depending on its rating. I am not an authority on this, so get a second opinion! But the material does matter with any barrier against kinetic weapons, and a certification is necessary for any faith in it. Does it have certified testing of its ability to stop a projectile? That's a good sign.

They *work* (used both in the field in a pinch) and they're usually handy.

I see in this thread much pearl-clutching vis-a-vis Shootings, but all of these tools work for Everyday sort of stuff, like say, a construction site, or extended camping trip. People get hurt and bleed all the time from things other than gunshot wounds (tampons and packing tape).

Ever seen a hiker fall and get skewered by a stick?
