On Armistice Day, November 11, 2024, Russia, the country that overthrew its own Imperial rulers through revolution as the War to End All Wars raged in Western Europe, and claims to have won the Great Patriotic War two decades later, sets a new record for casualties of its own personnel in its own war of conquest and genocide on the same territories 80 years later.
When you do not learn from the past, you are doomed to repeat it.

It's always full today.
My son was proud to be playing in the band. His last time having that privilege.

During the First World War, on 31 October 1914 at Hollebeke, Belgium, while serving in the British Indian Army, Khudadad Khan performed an act of bravery for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. The Cross was the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
All his comrades were killed.
Henry Gunther, the last allied soldier to die before #armistice.

And for my Valencian Abuelo Jose Alemany who resisted against Franco. He was unsuccessful and his family and country were subjected to that dictator’s rule. But eventually it was cast off and now the people in Valencia today have the freedom to protest and resist again as right wing extremists try to use catastrophe to pull them back to fascism. #mazondimision
Soldiers and civilians are dying today in the fields of Europe and the Holy Lands on the wishes of dictators and fascists who twist old rallying cries as cover for imperial conquest and genocide.
We must end this way of solving our differences.
But it won't be ended through capitulation or coddling these so-called leaders, or ignoring those who line up behind them.

I always admired Kurt Vonnegut's view of #ArmisticeDay, #RomeoAndJuliet, and #Music.
As we mark #VeteransDay this year, we would do well to remember its origin, the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. This date was celebrated as #ArmisticeDay, a day to end all wars, until 1954 during the Korean War, when the US Congress re-named it Veterans Day. The glorification of those who fight in wars, and thus war itself, turned the original meaning of Armistice Day on its head.
We can reclaim the spirit of Armistice Day this year by calling for a permanent ceasefire in #Gaza and throughout the Middle East. The surest way to achieve such a ceasefire is for our own government to stop sending bombs to Israel to be dropped on Palestinian children and their parents. It is high time to put an end to genocide, military confrontation, and the prospects of a nuclear war that could bring a terrible end to human civilization as we know it.
