@RealJournalism I'm not gonna deny that #verticalfarming is being used for green washing and the startups related to that are the worst. Let's not flush the baby with the bath water though. Hydroponics, aquaponics and so on are still a great idea, it's only that it's always that without the social change, #solarpunk is green washing.

As a practicioner of #aquaponics, I see it like this. Vertical farming, if done right is an extremely efficient use of water, and nearly 100% use of the added fertilizer, or as it is in the case of aquaponics, added fish feed nitrogen. If a building was like a cohousing project, with every family on the southern side of the building having a few rows of the nutrient film pipes for their own fitting, it might actually be great. not as a top down approach, but withing a communal effort. At the ground level or below ground, there might be a hidden fish tank and the filters, the feed there doesn't need to be transported up with any elevators but simply pumped up to the roof and then gravitationally distributed to the flats.

The best outcome would be not only locally grown vegetables, but also out-of-market ways of sustaining people. Large system is always more stable than a small ones. Vertical farming is only possible now because we have reliable water and air pumps.

As I said, it's a really good idea, just that it's often presented without any social change, as green washing.

What kind of deficiency is it? Phosphorus?

Edit: What I learned so far - it's not phosphorus because younger leaves look worse than the older ones. So it must be one of the immobile nutrients.

Update: the plants have suddenly just started to feel better. The only thing that changed was temperature. I had relatively high pH so maybe it wasn't about the absence of nutrients but lack of their bioavailability, which changes wildly with pH. It lowered with the temperature and the problem just solved itself.

@hexx wasn't it the opposite? Tech boom and then industrial agriculture? Haber Bosh process didn't happen in a vacuum. People were already concerned about running out of natural nitrogen sources.

But now we have alternatives to haber Bosh. We can seriously be making nitrogen out of the atmosphere and wood directly at a farm

And with the modern knowledge we can do things like #aquaponics, that was not really doable before the modern water quality testing kits and continuously working water and air pumps

My small #aquaponics success. After hibernating the #fish for 4 months without any feeding, they woke up and the water parameters went to critical level - although no ammonia was detected (AOB colony in biofilter was doing good), the level of nitrites went up uncontrollably. Apparently, the NOB colony wasn't healthy. We replaced large portion of water. Nothing changed for some reason. In desperation I added some molasses to the biofilter. Two days later the water turned cloudy and the Nitrite level went down. The biofilter got supercharged, the pump clogged with those #bioflocs but the system is rescued.

Going through old files & found things I lost to severe #depression.

Now I'm looking forward to start over & leave the past behind.

Have given up trying to #change others, just looking to a place to isolate, grow #vegetables, have an #aquaponics system & some #chickens.

I feel like I'm living in 1930s & have to set up my life for the next horrible 20 years since most people are too busy looking through their self built tunnel, silencing & attacking anyone who doesn't .

I feel like my father before revolution in #Iran, warning us with his #wisdom to look beyond the words & never trust the mullahs, our #arrogance & #ignorance destroyed our lives.
