...equally. What happens when "rules for thee, not for me" is applied, can be seen, e. g. in #GeorgeOrwell's #AnimalFarm: "some animals are more equal than others," as many of you might remember. What ensues, is the rule of the strongest, but even that position is subject to change.
No-one can live safely, not even emperors (think of several Roman ones.)

Who recalls this one?

As I worked my way through the story I recalled thinking it was a silly satire back in middle school, I mean animals taking over a farm. Now that I am older I see it much differently. Each animal plays a role we have seen in humans as the story chronicles the evolution from a rebellion against tyranny to a totalitarian regime.

It sends a clear message, not as graphic as 1984, but just as relevant today as when it was first published in 1945.

"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."

I have just finished reading Animal Farm by George Orwell and oh my gosh, this book will stay with me for a long time. As far as I can remember it was my first time reading it, and I think reading it now has made it extra impactful.

So recognizable, especially now, you read it with the dread of knowing what is approximately going to come. Horrendous in its simplicity, a child could almost understand it...

Honestly shivers...

Published in 1945 but written between November 1943-February 1944.

Photo is the cover of the 1st edition of the book. The subtitle 'A fairy story'' was not used in later editions.

Was thinking about #AnimalFarm today, and realized that if you follow the symbolism, Orwell is saying that the tsar was the one and only true human in Russia, and all other Russians are a bunch of animals, which I wasn't sure how to feel about. But then I read the plot recap and was reminded that Orwell depicts this human as an irresponsible alcoholic who caused his own downfall among the animals, which made my respect for Orwell's symbolism grow just that much more.
