I never was that fond of this album compared to their other <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/80s" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>80s</span></a> output, but now that I'm listening to it again I start to realise how good it is again. Face Up is a brilliant closer, voice strained as ever.</p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/80sMusic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>80sMusic</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/alternativedance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>alternativedance</span></a></p>

This compilation album I feel is similar to <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/factoryrecords" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>factoryrecords</span></a> lablemates <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/NewOrder" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewOrder</span></a>'s Substance, in that it shows a development from <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/PostPunk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PostPunk</span></a> towards <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/alternativedance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>alternativedance</span></a> with a hint of <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/synthpop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>synthpop</span></a>, not chronological. It's danceable rock with some hip-hop influences. The album starts off with an incredible track, which captures your attention immediately. I went ahead and treated myself with a very rare Taiwanese version for my birthday this year and the Discogs seller was just the best!</p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/90s" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>90s</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/90sMusic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>90sMusic</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/AlternativeRock" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AlternativeRock</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/AlternativeDance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AlternativeDance</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/CD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CD</span></a></p>

With so much musical experience, the jangly guitar sound of Marr and the danceable synths of Sumner it's no wonder that they wrote one of the most brilliant <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/90s" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>90s</span></a> albums. I was looking for it on <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/vinyl" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vinyl</span></a> for a long time and finally found a copy!</p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/synthpop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>synthpop</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/alternativedance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>alternativedance</span></a></p>
Defiance!<p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/OTD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OTD</span></a> August 5, 1991<br>Wolfgang Press – Queer LP (UK release)</p><p>This was my introduction to the band. I’d heard some previous singles, but they were a dark, noisy post-punk band that just didn’t appeal to me. But Queer is…different.</p><p>The album's sound includes a lot of samples and funkier, poppier beats than previous albums. AllMusic describes Queer as "alien funk, a collection of idiosyncratic rhythms, dark textures, and ominous grooves." </p><p>I describe the sound of Queer as darkly seductive. It’s sort of "dance" music, but not entirely. It has a solid rhythm section like a dance album, but with noise pop flourishes throughout. </p><p>Michael Allen’s vocals are smooth, cool, and dark. For the most part he doesn’t sing as much as he kind of raps. </p><p>Tons of samples too. Turns out De La Soul's “3 Feet High and Rising” had a big influence on the band and their approach to this album. </p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/AlternativeDance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AlternativeDance</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/PostPunk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PostPunk</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/IndiePop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IndiePop</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>music</span></a></p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JG4o0QKb_98" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=JG4o0QKb_9</span><span class="invisible">8</span></a></p>
