I've been using AirTags hidden on some of my items that would be typical thief targets. Today I learnt about the AirGuard Android application which you can find on F-Droid. I had no idea that anyone would be able to just play an alert and reveal the location of the AirTag that was hidden. Any other cost effective solutions that can replace these?

Nach wie vor warnt die App «AirGuard» zuverlässig vor fremden Trackern

The application #AirGuard is supposed to seek out physical tracking tokens. Unfortunately, its privacy policy is deceitful:
'... we have used the Minimal Data Usage principle and the Offline First principle.'
Not at all. It requires lots of permissions: the exact location during background runs, network access, etc.

Then they lied about its compulsiveness:
'The app accesses your location data (if consent is given) ...'
It violates the #GDPR.

The #AirGuard app available on #fdroid is designed to protect #Android users from #tracking devices like #AirTags It allows users to detect AirTags by periodically scanning their surroundings using Bluetooth on their Android phones. The app saves detected trackers locally on the device and alerts the user if a tracker is detected multiple times, enabling them to play a sound to locate it. (1/3)

Yesterday morning I installed the #airguard android app, because why not? 😁

What it does: it scans for Bluetooth trackers (like apple's airtags). If the scan returns an unknown Bluetooth device again and again, while you are on the move, it means that it could be a tracker.

However, when I was travelling by train in the afternoon I got false-positive warnings since people on the train had trackers and the train was moving 😂

Still good to know that it works and would catch these trackers! 😎👌🏾
