For Black History Month. This is called “Bust of a Man” by Francis Harwood. Unfortunately, that is all we really know for sure about it. It might be a portrait, it might be from Hrwood’s imagination. The features are highly individualized, such as that scar. But who the sitter was, if there ever was one, is a mystery.

"If art can be at the service of anything, it's about letting us see a state of grace for those people who rarely get to be able to be seen that way." - Kehinde Wiley
"The art and poetry, conversation, and essays in this volume seek to gather shattered, scattered pieces of Black history and put them back together again."
I'm luxuriating in the pre-semester ability to slowly read this new book "Praise Songs for Dave the Potter," edited by P. Gabrielle Foreman. Such a wonderful presentation of art and poetry by David Drake, Jonathan Green, and Glenis Redmond. Beautiful and thoughtful memory work.
Allan Rohan Crite (1910-2007), “Et verbum caro factum est, et habitávit in nobis, et vídimus glóriam eius.” Pen and ink on cream illustration board, 1943. 254x216 mm; 10x8 1/2 inches, sold at Swann Auction Galleries in 2021 for $15,000. From the website: “This beautiful drawing by Crite illustrates the Latin verse of John 1:14: "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us. And we saw His glory." #arthistory #blackart #africanamericanart
