Duo Niepold / Cutting
“Uphill Way”

A new one from the marvelous Anne Niepold & Andy Cutting!

Who obviously should have ridden bicycles 🚴

Listen to the way they intertwine their twin button boxes while keeping a playful bass cycle

A beat-up East Asian Sheng mouth organ shows up at 8:00 in this #BBC doc. I dropped a comment that cousins of those were developed 3,000 years ago and then carried back to Europe on the Silk Road in the 1600s and started spawning the harmonica, melodica, reed organ, #accordion and all Western free-reeds 🪗

That’s a hard one. I wrote a book about Accordions, so it would have to be a musician. But there’s a lot of accordionists, which one?

Oh! Cyrill Demian 🪗 Patented the 1st instrument called an #Accordion — it may have been called something else, but they scribbled that out and wrote “Accordion” — on May 6, 1829

You can see on the diagram where a word has been scribbled out and written next is “Accordion“.

Too late for this I got today from Le Winston Band: a modern Quebecois folk rock zydeco group

It’s literally “yacht rock” as it’s about getting a wild gig on a big boat off the coast of New Brunswick, and then not getting paid

I’ve started my list like that, yup

It’s already changed a few times

I probably won’t offer the opportunity to share my favourite hour and fifteen minute five #accordion (and that’s it) album by a lovely new-music artist who died this week

It could be rather life changing if you experienced it

But I’m not sure if folks would go for that one

#ListeningClub seems a bit more pop music oriented

Granny’s Attic (Worcester, UK) has a new record out!

With
the remarkable #CohenBraithwaiteKilcoyne: Concertina, Melodeon 🪗
&
George Sansome: Guitar, Bouzouki 🎸
&
Lewis Wood: Violin, Viola 🎻

+
Sid Goldsmith: Double Bass

Here’s a vid of Cohen’s “Outlandish Knight” (from his own Play Up the Music! record

Proud to say we enticed Miss Murgatroid out of retirement to play our @accordionnoir festival back before COVID curtailed our live activities

We didn’t get any soundboards but I was pretty happy about the festival the next week:

Not sure if I have to officially post that I’ve collected the #ListeningClub #frisbaton from its secure location and will be caring for it over the week in preparation for next Sunday

If I do an #accordion obscurity, your job may be to narrow its year, continent, country, language, artist, album

And I’ll try to make it as interesting as I can. Thinking of various ones now

For a head start you can preview almost 20 years of @accordionnoir radio episodes at AccordionNoir.org

Pretty sure Woody’s recordings are mostly over on Smithsonian/Folkways,(for now)

Some at the Library of Congress issued by Electra/Rounder in the 90s and are streaming but the extensive notes are missing 😤

#Folkways keeps the old Arhoolie Records albums available — including tons of #zydeco #conjunto & #cajun #accordion because unlike the rest of the US folk revival, Austrian-born Chris Strachwitz was not afraid of the squeezebox
