A colleague called me yesterday. We both took part in the recent Polish Optical Conference (www.konferencja-optyczna.pl) at the break of June and July and I had to run for train after my talk. He did not have time to ask me questions. Yesterday, almost two weeks after, he did ask his questions and we had a vivid discussion. Wow. This is my first-timer for that and also a very pleasant feeling of „retrieving" the past time. I liked that.

I'm on leave this week.

I'm second marking resit exams today.

The mark scheme has only a passing resemblance to the exam.

The marking spreadsheet wasn't even built in the same universe as the exam and the mark scheme.

A third person take of the poster session at CLEO/Europe 2025 conference in Munich this June. Explaining contents of my poster on second-order optical nonlinear response of epitaxial rhombohedral boron nitride and observed couplings of blue-violet incident light with defects active in the UV-A and UV-C. Hope a paper would follow this autumn. #optics #physics #photonics #academiclife
That was a remarkable conference. Has always been for the past 20y as I recall ;-)

No way—today I’m starting my new position as Assistant Professor of Practice at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in Guangzhou, China!

Over the next few years, I’ll be teaching and researching DMI design practices in a totally new context—just steps away from one of the world’s major manufacturing hubs. It’s bound to be wild.

But hey, don’t be fooled by the corporate-style photo or the fancy titles—I’m still the same A++ weirdo you all know.

The Computer Science and Engineering Department of the Instituto Superior Técnico (University of #Lisbon) is carrying out an open search process for possible candidates for openings for faculty positions to happen in 2026. This open search is targeted at possible candidates, who have an interest in enrolling at the base level of the #university #professional #career (Assistant Professor), in all scientific areas of the Department.

Today I set up my first #Finkelstein reaction. I've always wanted to do one because the name is so evocative. To my amusement my collaborator and I both got bored in the same meeting and happened on exactly the same procedure buried in a paper from 1921 at the same time. Our screenshots crossed. It was rather hilarious. But now we have some sodium iodide heating with an organochlorine compound in acetone in a pressure tube.
We're feeling lucky! #chemistry #academiclife

Working on part 2/8 of my master's thesis. Currently just under 4k words and just over 20 pages. Trying to finish designing an economy of scale study on how hard it is for a grocery store to make and sell its own bread, and then how to pass the bread along in an ethical way without contributing further to food waste. And it's due in about 30 hours but I'm only going to spend another hour or two on the damn thing lol.
