bookandswordblog
Struggling Achaemenid historian Henry P. Colburn got a full-time one-year position (in the weird world of 2020s academia that is a good job) https://henrycolburn.hcommons.org/2025/07/07/veritatem-dilexi/ #academicLife #histodons #achaemenidEmpire #academicChatter

Ness
Been working on cleaning up and formatting a collab paper to submit for review. I just went to login to submit and now there is text in bright red, bold font saying that they are not currently taking submissions.
It's the US Fish and Wildlife Service's Journal of Fish and Wildlife Management, so a federal journal. We can probably assume why.
This was a relatively recent change. We were worried about this and checked a few weeks back and were good to go. UGH. What a bummer.
#academicchatter

the roamer
Met my MSc dissertation students this week. All good natured people. But the genAI rot is spreading.

About half of them do their work, and ask me questions about the problems they encounter. I advise on possible next steps. We meet again next week. All good.

But.

The other half, each of them perfectly well meaning, came back to me with questions that had nothing to do with their projects, and proposed solutions that are alien to the framework we are using. After some serious conversations, I found that in each case they had relied on chatGTP answers to their prompts. They had not read the actual papers I had given them.

Some had implemented equations that are patently false, not by error (this would be good for learning), but because chatGPT told them so.

A significant part our students can't read anymore. They need to interact with genAI, and they think this is research.

We are heading for trouble. In higher education, and in society at large.

#noAI #AcademicChatter

Mariusz Klimczak
Got a manuscript accepted this morning at Optics Express 🤓 It’s the second time here when we got „as is” acceptance which is not really customary with this journal. Admittedly it has been significantly improved and revised since the version available at arxiv though. Still a nice perk during holiday. Am looking forward to pushing the open access charge paperwork at Uni at this holiday time 😜 #academicchatter
