#academicchatter #ukpol I usually avoid talking about politics on this handle, but the news of the proposal of scrapping nonEU #ILR (indefinite leave to remain) frightens me, and got me wondering how many in #UK universities would be affected if this really happens. I wouldn't be surprised that most Uni employees are either citizens or on temporary visa?

I still need to finish a majority of this research proposal in the next week (which sucks, and I procrastinated too much), but today I received the confirmation that I can spend 3 months with one of the (literally) coolest* researchers of my field if the proposal gets through!! So I guess I really need to make an effort now :D

* We can say that in our field because we cool atoms to nearly absolute zero. Very cool.

I needed to contact Zenodo support, because some idiot from US wanted to upload their files to my community meant for University of Eastern Finland users. Their response

"I don't care, I admitted it so I can get a DOI link which I have. P.S Add Finland's high donestic violence rates to your research work."

WTF people?! 😬

I am redesigning my course and want to do an overhaul with linking assessments, resources etc. to appropriate course learning outcomes.
The templates I come across are Word documents with tables. Seems like a better format/program for this would exist by now?
I imagine a program with color text blocks that I can easily move around and match to the outcomes rather than copy/paste text in a table.
Suggestions? :boost_requested:

People should keep their eye on the recent US federal executive orders on H1B visas. It's not clear exactly what is happening, who it will apply to, or whether it is even legal for them to do it, but there is a new executive order to start charging $100,000 annually for someone to be on an H1B visa. Presumably paid for by the employer. This is a developing story and will likely change as you read this, but... FYI.

1. Closer to being done with edits of this academic article that has been torturing me for weeks.
2. Made a yummy asam pedas with not so usual ingredients (end of the month fridge cleaning): Fucuk (not a typoed cussword! fish paste in-between thin fried tofu sheets), shrimp, and the usual of torch ginger, terung pipit (a tiny type of eggplant that looks like peas), purple eggplant, okra, tomato. Delicious and I'm all set for the week. There's also stirfried green beans with egg.
3. Everything kept and cleaned before 8pm is something of an accomplishment!

My scholarly reading (on leadership giving) has been disconcerting tonight. Thorup 2013 (p264) calls out the “growing confidence in the ‘over-confident individual’—a leader who has proven his or her financial competence and is now assumed to also be capable of providing ‘solutions’ to social problems.”

Ouch.

I always forget and am reminded - how long uploading and submitting (especially the revised) manuscripts can be...
Guess that's why I tend to do it on weekends. Oof - anyways - finally done! Even used this pic of clouds I took yesterday - in the ToC fig.
