1001 Other Albums
SpaceAce Sunday | Buffalo Springfield (1966, Canada/US)

Our next Self-Titled Summer spotlight is on number 1054 on The List. And, as it was submitted by our dear friend J aka SpaceAce, this is technically a SpaceAce Sunday. Why not on a Sunday? Well. Today is a year since he left us. A whole year. Makes no sense at all.

As for this album, I somehow did not know Buffalo Springfield was a Neil Young band or that they’re the ones responsible for the fantastic protest single “For What It’s Worth”, a song I’ve always absolutely loved. As soon as I pressed play on this album and heard the first few notes of that song, I literally smiled and thanked J out loud.

Thanks, J. Love that I’m still learning from you.

You are still very much missed. 💜

Want to read more? 1001 Other Albums
Self-Titled Summer | Buena Vista Social Club (1997, Cuba)

Our next Self-Titled Summer spotlight is on number 461 on The List, submitted by dharmadischarge. This is one of three albums to come out of the studio sessions of a Havana-based project that brought 20-some mostly retired and local musicians together to celebrate Cuban music, with this release highlighting son cubano, bolero, descarga, danzón, guajira, and criolla. This is essentially the only studio album put out by the collective under this name, but it became a worldwide sensation.

Want to read more? 1001 Other Albums
Self-Titled Summer | Boston (1976, US)

Our next Self-Titled Summer spotlight is on number 284 on The List, submitted by baz. This is the debut album from just another "band" out of Boston that was legally only two people at the time, with most of the instrumentation played and recorded by just one of them, in his own basement studio. Classic case of arena rock...from a basement. But heck, when that basement results in the absolute banger that is "More Than A Feeling", that must be one magical basement.

Want to read more? 1001 Other Albums
Self-Titled Summer | Bones UK (2019, UK)

Our next Self-Titled Summer spotlight is on number 211 on The List, submitted by moss. Bones UK is the "future rock" duo of rhythm guitarist/vocalist Rosie Oddie (aka Rosie Bones) and lead guitarist Carmen Vandenberg. While this is the duo's debut album, they co-wrote and performed on what ended up being Jeff Beck's final album (Loud Hailer, 2016) a few years prior to this release. Highlights on their catchy, danceable, and empowering album include their cover of Bowie's "I'm Afraid of Americans", and their tongue-in-cheek "Girls Can't Play Guitar" (which features a riff that will be familiar to those who listened to our last STS spotlight album).

Want to read more? 1001 Other Albums
Self-Titled Summer | Bo Diddley (1958, US)

Our next Self-Titled Summer spotlight is on number 276 on The List, submitted by BlueGambit86. This is the debut studio album from "The Originator", known by that name for his influence on a number of big acts such as Buddy Holly and Jimi Hendrix moving from blues music to rock & roll. The eponymous title track had already been a number one R&B hit a few years prior to the release of this album, which collects other singles he had released between 1955 and 1958 and showcases the "Bo Diddley beat".

Want to read more? 1001 Other Albums
Self-Titled Summer | Aucan (2008, Italy)

Our next Self-Titled Summer spotlight is on number 44 on The List, submitted by mbr. This is the debut album from the multi-disciplinary collective/trio of Dario Dassenno, Francesco D’Abbraccio, and Giovanni Ferligna. While the releases that follow really amp up the electronic elements, stepping into the world of IDM, dark techno, and dub step with what will become an impressive set of synths and other gear, this album showcases their math/post rock origins. Not to be confused with Aucán, the Argentinian prog folk band from the 70s who also have a (rather charming) self-titled album.

Want to read more? 1001 Other Albums
Self-Titled Summer | Animals As Leaders (2009, US)

Next in our new Self-Titled Summer series is number 472 on The List, submitted by Chip_Unicorn. This is the debut album from the Washington D.C.-based band when it was still the solo project of guitarist Tosin Abasi. As Chip_Unicorn noted when sending in this submission, this instrumental prog metal album is full of complex but fun songs that play hard with time signatures and very fast guitar work.

Want to read more? 1001 Other Albums
Self-Titled Summer | A Tribe Called Red (2012, Cayuga First Nation/Mohawk/Nipissing First Nation)

Welcome back, all! We’re going to keep it simple at 1001 Other Albums headquarters for the next few months, with a summer-long spotlight series on albums in The List that are self-titled. Such albums are typically debuts aka gateways into discography deep dives so, rather than attempting to do any sort of comprehensive write-up, I’m going to (try to) keep it brief, point out some cool shit about each album (incl. band origins, tasting notes, standout tracks, and where they are now), and let you dig further if said cool shit strikes your fancy.

As we’ll be doing this in alphabetical fashion, first up in our Self-Titled Summer is number 1014 on The List, submitted by myself. This is the debut from the band now known as The Halluci Nation, and a great way to get into their unique sound: powwow-step or electric powwow, a brilliant mix of dubstep, electro, dancehall, reggae, First Nations music, and hip hop.

Want to read more? 1001 Other Albums
Rachel’s – Systems/Layers (2003, US)

Our next spotlight is on number 269 on The List, submitted by HerbT. This is the final album from Rachel’s, a post-classical/indie chamber project from Louisville, Kentucky started in 1991 by guitarist Jason Noble (formerly of post-hardcore band Rodan). The album was created in collaboration with a theatre company, SITI, for a production of the same name, the music born out of improvisational sessions where the musicians responded to what the actors were doing on stage. The result is breathtaking.

Want to read more? 1001 Other Albums
Negativland – Dispepsi (1997, US)

Our next spotlight is on number 1004 on The List, submitted by dwenius. By the time this experimental sound-collage/plunderphonics band and multimedia collective had released Dispepsi, they had already got a bunch of media attention linked to a mass murderer case, and had experienced a multi-year legal battle with U2’s label and their own (along with some FBI nonsense) for an innocently(-ish) named and now withdrawn EP. Dispepsi continues the group's aural mischief (and thankfully without any legal repercussions), taking a swipe at the so-called “Cola Wars” and advertising in general by parodying and sampling Pepsi and Coca-Cola commercials, among other things.

Want to read more? 1001 Other Albums
Sadistic Mika Band (サディスティック・ミカ・バンド) – Black Ship (黒船) (1974, Japan)

Our next spotlight is on number 84 on The List, submitted by avi_miller. Black Ship (or Kurofune) is Sadistic Mika Band’s second LP, regarded as an influential album in Japanese rock history. The cover art plus the fact that this band’s name is a parody of “Plastic Ono Band” – “sadistic” a reference to how Mika used knives in the kitchen – tells you exactly what this album is going to sound like. It’s quirky, it’s breezy, it’s delightful. The band would break up after the following album but would go on to do more wonderful things (Yellow Magic Orchestra, anyone?), so this is a lovely rabbit hole to go down.

Want to read more?
