@pixouls I *love* RSS.

It's amazing how people are now so conditioned to accept walled gardens, and handing over personal data, that open alternatives are such a surprise.

How is @penpot funded :blobthinking:? They don't seem to take donations and I can't find info about it on kaleidos' site either.

@cwebber So... Food for thought.

I would also mention that the Fediverse is LONG overdue for universal groups/communities. And we have no standard for that. Not even in the form of a compatible group engine.

Which is bad, because groups work really well as a content discovery strategy.

We have Lemmy, which is *almost there* but they aren't really, actively interested in federating with anything but themselves.

Almost as if temporary high-growth baby corporations obsessed with their exit aren’t the best vehicles for guaranteeing the long-term welfare of the species or something.

FACEBOOK AGAIN and this time not collecting personal data to jeopardize democracies worldwide, it's something else.

“Despite their importance to , the workers in this Nairobi office are among the lowest-paid workers for the platform anywhere in the world, with some of them taking home as little as $1.50 per hour, a TIME investigation found. The testimonies of Sama employees reveal a workplace culture characterized by mental trauma, intimidation, and alleged suppression of the right to unionize. The revelations raise serious questions about whether Facebook—which periodically sends its own employees to Nairobi to monitor Sama’s operations—is exploiting the very people upon whom it is depending to ensure its platform is safe in Ethiopia and across the continent. And just as Facebook needs them most, TIME can reveal that content moderators at Sama are leaving the company in droves.........

Don't get me wrong, computers can absolutely help us regain our environmental efficiency. They just *aren't*.

Not as long as we're:
* constantly syncing everything to the cloud,
* expecting same-hour delivery,
* funding our clickbait via surveillance advertising,
* buying a new phone every year,
* using AIs because they're cool rather than useful,
* running bloated software & webpages,
* buying into "big data"
* etc

Computing is environmentally cheap, but it rapidly adds up!

Was not expecting to see an end-of-year review feature on a Fediverse site but @bookwyrm did it. This is actually really cool.

Decentralisation begins at decentring yourself.

• Corporate vs human futures and topologies

• Big Web vs Small Web (and web3 vs web0)

• Decentralised and decolonial approaches to technology

Ah, the Traveler #bot runs code based on that Github repo at least. I found:

readme.phys.ethz.ch/chat/matri

And this is the bot's home: voyager.t2bot.io/#/

Looks to be hosted by Travis Ralston who is on the #Matrix team. It's Graph and Stats UI are broken, and that's a known problem. In its own chatroom everyone asks what this bot is.

matrix.to/#/#voyager:t2bot.io

I will ban it, as I see no advantage to having it lurking around. Also I wonder about #GDPR compliance, but not time to check.
