Here is a link to the high-resolution Prussian Mosel Vineyard map of 1868. Vineyards were ranked from 1 (best) to 8 (worst), based on profitability (economics!). On the map, the darker the better.

And just a couple of years later, the Prussians would take Alsace and outlaw Riesling and Gewürztraminer to protect the interests of these southern German wine producers. Imagine, somewhere in a parallel universe, Alsace is without Riesling!
