OwnCast is a Fediverse livestreaming platform with built in chat, and is sort of a Fediverse alternative to Twitch.

You can follow the project itself at @owncast and find out more on the website at owncast.online

You can follow OwnCast accounts from Mastodon etc and they will let you know in your feed when they go live.

Some good accounts to follow include (in no particular order):

@live - Live DJ sets, soulful house music

@jnktn_tv - Live DJ shows on Saturdays, lots of different music styles

@Hamish - Live streaming retro games, electronics projects, programming etc

@rstv - 24 hour streaming of weird retro films and TV

@hatnix - Linux gaming streams, usually in English but sometimes in German

@fedi - Monthly show by the Small Technology Foundation, promoting small scale privacy-friendly internet projects

@ozoned - Live streams about Linux and gaming

@Tutanota Just signed up for an account.

I was pleasantly surprised to see this at the end of the first message I read: #Mastodon is first among ways to follow!

Big Tech needs to play fair if we want a better web. But Tutanota users can't register a Microsoft Teams account and Microsoft won't change this. This demonstrates why stronger antitrust legislation is needed: tutanota.com/blog/posts/micros

There's imginn.com/ and honestly, I am looking forward for more and more Pixelfed instances to come into existence making Instagram obsolete :)

So @codeberg (think of it as the ethical GitHub) is a not-for-profit that depends on donations. You can also become a member of the org by supporting it.

Since I’m moving our projects there, I’ve signed up as an active member and Small Technology Foundation is now a supporting member with both me and the org making separate small annual contributions to the organisation.

If you’re using the service and can afford it, please help them maintain the commons.

If you haven't done it already, it's a really good idea to put something on your profile, at least in the bio text part :blobhappy:

Even a sentence or two is better than blankness, it shows you are a human being!

Many people on here will only accept follows from people with text in their profile, as it is considered a common courtesy.

This applies to all Fediverse platforms. If you're on Mastodon, you can do this through the "Edit profile" or "Edit info" links.

We are at 4.91M 'local' posts now on mstdn.social :mastodon_oops: :mastodon:

Would cool if we hit the 5M :cat_typing:

How long have you had your Gmail, your Yahoo or your Hotmail/Outlook account? Five, ten, even 15 years? It's time to make a fresh start and take back your privacy! 💪😀 Here is why. 👇 tutanota.com/blog/posts/quit-g

After trying it out in 2018 or 2019, almost 3 months ago I re-joined Mastodon. It was a big deal for me, since I distrust every social network out there.

Despite the apparent similarity to other sites, Mastodon – and the Fediverse in general – is not even in the same league.

In less than 3 months I've found interesting and helpful people, thoughtful debates, sincere posts and general openness. A complete departure from "before".

I'm in my 50s and this is the web I remember from the 1.0 days.

In the past I use to think Elon Musk was pretty cool, I mean he made most of his money with internet stuff and setup a space company from the ground up..! Things I would also love to do..

But seeing what he has become the past years.. He has just become one big disappointment. I thought he was more "nerd-like" and kind to people but he really is just an ass :sad_cat: Not even arms or legs..

No all fun aside, personally I find it very sad to see such a big platform as Twitter just gets manipulated into being bought by a silly man who has way to much money.. We are small but I like to think this platform is all of ours and we all have a saying in it even though I mostly pay the bill. A social network isn't fun with a weird captain like Elon Musket or Mark Zukc-a-berg :blobderp:

Also, things will become slow. Some instances will have hiccups. There is a *lot* of new traffic coming their way!

Be patient, give it some time. I can assure you your instance admins are aware and are trying to figure out how to deal with all this. Give them space. Pressure won't help.

At the end of the day, fedi will be still there tomorrow, and the day after. The wave will pass. Improvements will have been made. We will all emerge a bit stronger and wiser. 😃
