@vs damn..
@vs but....but...but, land of the free. Why would anyone want a (non)heath(non)care system like America?
@vs I have a thing for jewelry. My idea of a perfect day is attending the Rock and Gem show in Tucson. Met a couple in the PHX rental car shuttle. She was wearing the biggest mounted diamond I have ever seen. It was, frankly, obscene. I asked her husband what he did for living. His response: "I own a healthcare company."
@vs oh but what if you have to wait a few months to get knee surgery or something? Is it worth the trade off? Is it??
@vs Everyone's gangsta until they get CANCER.
@vs The number one reason for filing for bankruptcy in the USA is due to medical bills and the companies hunting them down for every cent plus interest!
@vs Medical debt forced me into bankruptcy decades ago. America's healthcare system sucks because it's about profit, not patient care. People suffer, and sometimes die, because funerals cost less than a trip to the hospital.
@vs I empathize with you greatly and I’m sorry for what happened to you. As a registered nurse of 30 years, it absolutely infuriates me. For Profit Healthcare is criminal.
@vs Heck, a great uncle in Canada went to Florida for a vacation underinsured... Had a heart attack. The costs to stabilize him and then bring him back to Canada bankrupted him and his wife, they lost their house and savings, and still owe some ridiculous bill they'll never pay off as retirees.
@vs Sad indeed.
@vs For profit healthcare is evil. My grandmother had a stroke that disabled her and paying for her care bankrupted my grandfather. The US doesn’t have a healthcare system, it has a network of extortionists.
@vs should have gotten a Singapore health care card
@vs Meanwhile, I'm on medicaid (which is government-run) in New York State and I love it.
@vs If more British people really understood how bad the US system is, they would be rioting until talk of privatization completely stopped.
@vs have been trying and failing for years to explain to my European relatives the realities of US healthcare. Unless you’re seriously wealthy, many people are one accident or serious illness away from financial ruin.
@vs
That story is not an exaggeration. The healthcare system in the US is horrendous.
A healthcare worker doing a home visit for the six-week baby check? Unheard of in the US! That's just one small example.
You do not want to privatize the NHS!
@monterossino
Apparently so. The company I work for provides interpreting services, and some calls I have gotten from the UK are for interpreting services for a home visit. Blew my mind the first time I got one of those calls
@monterossino
Even fertility services are covered in the UK. Insurance in the US does not cover that
@vs The USA is The Land Of The Free innit - you are perfectly free to die of being too poor to afford doctors and nobody is going to interfere with your right to do so.
"Right to life"? Nah, mate, that's only in the DoI, not in the constitution, so it doesn't count (so I'm told by Americans).
@vs I agree. Take a look at the US model. They even charge for an ambulance!
@vs I live in the with private healthcare, whatever you have to do, fight tooth and nail if you have to, do not let them privatize your healthcare
@vs no please don’t!!

My wife has cancer, it took 5 months to wipe out 20 years of life savings and that was with insurance. The experience has turned me into a hateful, bitter person. We did everything we were told. We went to college, got degrees, avoided credit card debt, spent wisely, saved a nice chunk of money in savings accounts and retirement accounts and minded our own business.

@vs Alt-text, cont.:
The USA healthcare system took all of our savings and retirement and forced us to refinance our house so that we lost 15 years of equity. This is a country I'm supposed to be proud of? I hate this system and anyone that defends it.

@vs Appreciate it; thank you :)
@vs
Private USA Healthcare sucks.
@vs Very sad to hear of this story - most civilised countries have a public health insurance scheme. Even Trump said that Australia’s health system (Medicare) beats that of the US but he did nothing about it. Australia finally kicked out a bodgie government that tried to cripple Medicare The real tragedy is that so many Americans who would benefit from a public health insurance scheme have been gaslighted to believe it is a really bad thing. Say no to #kentuckyfriedmedicine
@vs used to think private health care can supplement public until I realized the failing public health system is DUE TO private sector siphoning off drs and rns.
Thankful for health care. We never once had to worry over cost of cancer treatment. Sure, there were long ER waits at times, & many things can be improved ... but not by being more like .
@JunkoV @vs A Canadian doctor telling you that you'll have to wait longer is a bit like an accountant telling you that your taxes went up because your income went up. The bad news is that you're doing great.
*Nobody* wants to endure what is required to jump to the front of the line. That's reserved for the worst day of your life, and plausibly the last day of your life.
@JunkoV @vs
There are very long waits at the ER in the US also, even with insurance. Unless you have life-threatening injuries, or the ER is empty, be prepared to wait for many hours. I once waited for over 10 hours after a car accident. I finally had enough and I left. I was in more pain from lying on the backboard than from any injuries from the accident itself.
NHS privatisation warning
