@tobru@mstdn.socialAre there any thoughts on the performance of the Rockchip RK3588 processor in the MNT Reform Next? I'd love to give it a try, but the last experiment with an ARM processor for a Linux everyday notebook (Thinkpad X13s) didn't go well. And I'm a bit hesitant to spend >1000 just to experiment.
My main daily use-cases: Mail (Thunderbird), heavy browsing (Firefox), development (VS Code, Python), note taking (Obsidian), container image building (Podman), shell stuff (ZSH). Must support: Arch Linux, KDE Plasma desktop, external 2nd screen, all connected with one cable (USB-C) via a docking station (Thinkpad). Additionally: occassional experimenting with local LLMs.
@tobru Maybe @geerlingguy knows more about the Chip.
@janikvonrotz @tobru it's a good Arm chip, but still pretty far behind something like Snapdragon X
@tobru maybe test if all your apps work by using a modern 16gb pi for some time? That might help on compatibility estimates
@tobru I'm basing this on my experience with the RK3399 and only 4 GiB memory, but the one thing that stands out to me as potentially being a bit dicey on the much more powerful RK3588 is "heavy browsing"
