Valve pulls in another graphics driver developer for Linux gaming https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2023/06/valve-pulls-in-another-graphics-driver-developer-for-linux-gaming/ #Linux #FOSS #Valve #Steam #SteamDeck
@gamingonlinux
who knows.. maybe this means that Valve has some ARM device in the pipeline..
@tizilogic
Good question. If they make Steam Deck successor with ARM CPU, then it would be safe to assume that #Box86 / #Box64 is going to be part of it.
So keep an eye on that project, see if Valve is contributing to it.

@testman exactly my thinking.. not sure they'll get the needed performance out of it though.. Apple apparently has some HW instructions baked into their silicon that help Rosetta perform crazy good on x86/x64 translation
@tizilogic @testman Couldn't it be instead about running Windows games on macOS with M1/M2 CPUs?
(optimizing Proton for Apple CPUs)
(I admit I know almost nothing about Proton and Steam implementation details)
@dolmen
Possible as well. Although doesn't Apple claim that Rosetta2 Just Works™?
Wouldn't that apply for games ad well?
Or is the massive amount of people who play video games on macOS begging Valve to figure out something better because Rosetta2 is not good enough for their hardcore gaming needs?
@dolmen @testman My best guess would be a no. But it's all just speculation. From what little I know of Alyssa, she very probably is also a Metal specialist and could be under contract to shorten the pipeline to play DirectX games on Mac..
But while M1 and M2 are impressive, I currently doubt that gamers would switch to Apple HW, mostly for the price tag that those devices have.
I guess we'll find out (hopefully soon )
