I've been tentatively tooting for a few days now, so I guess it's about time I did my !

Hi everyone. I'm a for a UK university by day.

Outside of work I spend far too much time tinkering with and a collection of (mainly ), but like to get out to do some (mainly landscape & nature).

What seems like a lifetime ago I studied at uni (I have since forgotten most of it!) with a real interest in . I do get outside some nights for 🔭 but I'm mainly a fair weather astronomer these days.

Also into :blobcatspace: , :blobcatmusic: and :blobcattea:

Oh, and I'm not actually a sentient teapot!

Look forward to tooting with you! :blobcathug:

It's a sign!
(Yes, I'm a grown adult. They were on offer in the shop)

Still trying to catch up on processing photos from this year. These are my favourites from a set taken in February at a nearby park!

Had to resort to turning the heating on for a bit at home. Might be bankrupt in an hour.

Just watched Everything Everywhere All at Once, and now I'm wondering what other films could have been improved by the addition of googly eyes! :blobcatgoogly:

Nothing like a flurry of emails from PayPal in a morning claiming you have set up a new account to really wake you up!

Looks like someone has set up their account using one of my gmail addresses (but missing the dot in my username). At first I thought it was for some malicious purpose, but the more I look at the details I suspect someone has just mistyped their email. They added a home address in Illinois, and a quick search shows people with the same name as me there. It wouldn't be the first time I got emails for a namesake in the USA!

Hoping it's just a mistake, but why does PayPal allow them to continue without being able to confirm their email? (Checked all activity on my Google account just in case, and MFA is enabled). Apparently it is a common issue with PayPal!

Reported it to PayPal anyway, so we'll see if I get a response. :blobcatnotlikethis:

Sometimes wonder if I'm actually a slave to my computer. Seem to have spent far too much time today just pushing data around - syncing onto other drives and computers (backups), onto my NAS to make them accessible, from memory cards, onto memory cards. Gigabytes flying all over the place! :blobcatcode:

Sadly I can't remember who the original poster was (thank you, whoever you were) but I am loving the new picture on every day!

Such creative and inventive use of everyday items to create miniature scenes! Makes me smile each morning.

The website has an RSS feed too.

Good morning to you too, Mr angry wasp who has been hiding in my bedroom all night!

That's one way to motivate me to get out of bed.

Finally watched Marvel's Eternals last night - had my expectations set extremely low based on the reviews and comments I had read.

One thing in particular is still really bugging me about it a day later: why do the Celestials have legs?

They live in deep space and have absolutely no use for them. It makes no sense that they would take humanoid form at all.

Top tip: before wasting 45 minutes of your Friday night trying to diagnose the issue with the Kodi box behind your TV, make sure the HDMI cable is fully plugged in! :blobcatnotlikethis:

Bit grumpy - my order of lose leaf tea has just been delivered.... in a somewhat soggy cardboard box. Thanks Royal Mail.

Now worried if it has affected the tea at all ☹️

Finally got my old Pi 3 set up as a Kodi box (LibreElec) and installed behind my TV.

Now, what to do with the dusty Pi 2 that was sat their previously, not really getting used :blobcatthinking:

1) had a lovely G&T
2) had a second G&T
3) drat, stopped to soon!

In other news, I love you all :blobcathearts:

M57 Ring Nebula

Magnitude 8.8 planetary nebula located 2,567 light-years away in the constellation Lyra. At the center is a white dwarf that burns over 100,000 degrees Kelvin. Surrounding it is an envelope about 2 to 3 light years in size of what was once its outer layers that were blown away into a cylindrical shape some 6,000-8,000 years ago.

I may just be over tired this afternoon, but the word "horizontal" just looks weird! There's something not quite right about it. :blobcatgoogly:

Today is rainy and blue. Here is a cute photo from the library staff room in these trying times:

Here are some highlights from my visit to the Lick Observatory yesterday, including up close and personal views of the Shane 3m telescope (and the observing astronomer & telescope operator workstations), the 36-inch historical refractor, some interesting historical artifacts -- including plate images of the Pleiades and NGC 891 and old CCD tech -- and some pretty pictures of the surrounding landscape and sunset 😎

I really wish computer systems would get the basics right, like transferring data accurately to endpoints.

Booked my car in for annual MOT and service today (and got confirmation email of date). Turned up at the garage and they said "you're booked in for Saturday according to the computer"

I suspect there's a manual process somewhere between the national website and the individual garages.
