"How much do you wanna tip?"
*custom amount* "-145"
Tip for you
It really should be illegal to count tips as part of the wage
Stop underpaying workers and don't let them rely on tips, that's freaking absurd
Perhaps next time when you're at a place that clearly does this...
...maybe do make a scene
Or not go there anymore
@stux This is pretty much every single restaurant in every single state in the US. (I disagree with the practice, btw.)
@stux unfortunately it is how most restaurants are run in the US. I was a server for almost 12 years and never once was paid more than $2.50. I relied on tips and it forced me to essentially beg when waiting on tables. I took so much belittlement from customers and managers alike. I'm glad to work now in an industry that pays me a living wage and I get tips. I also get to tell people off if they get rude I'll never go back to serving
@stux I actually looked it up, thinking that this exception to minimum wage laws happened under Reagan. Nope, it was FDR and it was part of the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act. Kind of disappointing, since that Act accomplished so many good things.
@stux
In #Iceland tipping is frowned on.
Workers are paid well and don't expect a tip. Some might even find it a bit rude.
This was explained to me by a waitress in Reykjavik who had previously taken me to task (good naturedly) regarding my choice of Italian beer over Icelandic beer; 'you don't like our beer?'
