For anyone who doesn't know Aaron, I really recommend watching this docu about him

And yes, at this point i don't care anymore if this docu is legal or illegal on YT

youtube.com/watch?v=3Q6Fzbgs_Lg

www.youtube.com- YouTubeEnjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

@stux
Aaron war ein toller Mensch, und er hätte viel für die Menscheit tuen können. Ich sehe es als globale Sünde, das man ihn in den Selbstmord getrieben hatt. ❤️ 🙏

@stux@mstdn.social don't forget! in America corporations are people and have rights while people are not people and don't!

@stux who created/controls Meta? Fine and jail them.

@stux Oh… THAT’S what Meta did (I had read random comments online, but wasn’t sure what they did and then got distracted by the avalanche of news coming at me.)

Ugh… that’s freaking HORRIBLE!

@stux And this could be said of every company training LLMs.

@stux we will never forget him. Thank you for the reminder. He's our martyr.

@stux Is the rich versus us all the time

@stux I’m not sure why you would say it’s illegal. Anna’s makes everything open for downloading and opposes copyright. The authors of those works could object but they would also very much object to Anna’s having “illegal “ copies and making them available outside of any protection.

@stux

should have paid the fine and bribed a few other politicians, like High-Class people do.

@stux His website is still up at aaronsw.com.

Among other things, he co-authored RSS at 14, cocreated Open Library and Reddit, was influential in Creative Commons, and founded Demand Progress. All of this in his too-short twenty-six years on this planet.

Aaron Hillel Swartz, may his memory be for a blessing.

@stux
Con deepl lo traduje al español

@stux the difference is that Aaron wanted to make public research free, and Meta wanted to make a profit.

@stux That is the world we live in. The state is the henchman of big capital and will utterly destroy any ordinary citizen who is deemed a threat to the income of big capital. A very educational film on that matter.

@stux
That's fiscal conservatism for you - Corporations should have all the rights of human beings, but none of the responsibilities.

@stux nodds in agreement

I miss Aaron Swartz.

  • Guy was based af!

@stux

It is only a crime when users do it…

@stux burn the tech companies 🔥put them to jail! All of them!

@stux This left me very impacted at the time. Sad.

@stux Long live #AaronSwartz and his fight against Internet bullies!

❤️‍🔥

@stux There exists a group photo of Aaron Swarz and Zuckerberg at MIT. Same story, different intents, different outcomes. Sadly not the good intention had the better outcome.
Edit: It was Sam Altman. But the point still remains. mamutovo.cz/@Razemix/113978218

MIT group photo. Aaron Swartz standing next to Sam Altman.
MamutovoRadomír Žemlička (@Razemix@mamutovo.cz)Attached: 1 image @TheAlgorythm@chaos.social @stux@mstdn.social That would be Sam Altman (OpenAI), not Zuck.

@TheAlgorythm @stux That would be Sam Altman (OpenAI), not Zuck.

@stux Why is it relevant what they use it for?

Did they have a permission to download it? If not it was illegal.

If so, I hope they signed the contract with blood and it cost Zuck jr.

@heiglandreas Because taking someone else’s work and then making money of it or a derivative work is worse than merely taking it.

@Leonick Morally yes. Absolutely with you.

@stux Happy to see truth getting out. I did warn people back, then that it was piracy to download, but nobody listen to me. Sometimes greed overtakes our mental capacity to be rational. Case in point #ZuckTheSchmuck #Muskrat #Bezos #LarryPage #SergeyBrin

@stux RSS daddy, the best thing the web ever had

@stux
Just reinforcement of the saying "The rich get richer, and the poor get poorer". If you are WHITE and RICH you can get away with anything.

@stux I wonder if Aaron's judge, Carmen Ortiz, will have the guts to punish the Meta in the same way

@ujeenator @stux I suspect that she'll be conspicuous by her silence.

@stux

Thanks for posting this. I'm not especially techie, so I'm learning things here. . . . Good, bad, and sad 😔

@stux When 1 person does it, jail. When an exciting new disruptive corp does it, it’s okay.

@stux@mstdn.social
Fuck meta, yes,but this is on meta. It's the whole system that sucks.

@stux we should hang Facebook executives I think Aaron would be happy with that

@meso @stux and not just facebook/meta. if anybody deserves it, its them, unless they voluntarily relinquished all their wealth over maybe 10m

@stux and the sad part is that they will get away with it, especially in the US.

@stux Best is that Aaron Swartz merely downloaded, and in a way that should be entirely legal.
Meanwhile Meta/Facebook definitely illegally downloaded it all *and* then made a derivative product out of it.

@stux I guess Zuckerberg being Elon Trump's sub has its benefits.

@cmlael67 @stux
Crime is only illegal if you don't have a power daddy.

@cmlael67 @stux That, and a $25 million “settlement” (read: bribe) to the fragile, sad, orange clown.

@stux@mstdn.social I've found other places with it (unless there's more than one and this is a different one than I've found). I'm not sure it would be "illegal". It's one of those situations that if you honour a request, you've technically not broken the law, and... If you want to "determine" if it is legal or not, it has to go to court.

@stux@mstdn.social This was so beautiful, thank you.

btw The audio on that link seems to break at 1 hour 30 mins in. This link's audio seems to be fixed
https://youtu.be/9vz06QO3UkQ. It's also on archive.org: https://archive.org/details/TheInternetsOwnBoyTheStoryOfAaronSwartz:neopossum_heart:

@stux
Thank you for that! I didn't know him or his story before.

This version is better, because the sound of the other one gets cut off at the last 10 min or so.

youtube.com/watch?v=9vz06QO3Uk

the license of the movie is:
Creative Commons license: Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported
which makes sense i guess

@stux never heard of that story but I’ll definitely check this out , thanks !

@stux Thanks! I'd never seen that. This particular link has some audio censorship shenanigans due to the mention of "suicide" toward the end, but I was able to find another YT link that doesn't edit it out. youtube.com/watch?v=9vz06QO3Uk

@stux I'm certainly going to check that out!!

@stux Do a quick search on peertube. Looking through it, you CAN'T not get it recommended to you.
