Working on a new server setup :ablobgrin:

**btw, this is an amazing way to teach kids about hardware!

Or use older machines, but if you can please do try and teach some! :cat_hug_triangle:

I am very thankful to my father for teaching me the basics about computer hardware

@stux This is amazing. How did you get the cardboard to stay so firm? Hot glue? Super glue?

@notnorm **its not mine!♥️😸 but I guess! It looks so awesome

@stux When i was learning how to fix computer hardware in the late 90s (as a vocational course), our computer teacher had five of these. So that our grabbity, static-filled, teen hands wouldn’t short stuff on expensive boards.
This is exactly what we practiced on 😂

@stux @_L1vY_ So satisfying. But why no Arctic Silver? Your CPU is gonna overheat.

@stux not for a paperless office

@stux I was really hoping you would get out the Red, Green, and Blue markers and "Gamer-ify" it in key places.

@stux no thermal paste? Fucking amateur hour

@stux Very nice. I made cardboard laptops for my kids in 2022. Not nearly as detailed as your project but I cut out each button on the keyboards to let them press separately, glued in screenshots from ridiculously old systems and added magnetic latches. These were Christmas day placeholders for computers to be ordered in January.

@stux I think they overdid the conformal coating somewhat.

@stux everything went well until the cat curled up in it...

@stux ... It looked good on paper ;-)

@stux I was looking forward to the installation of the floppy drive and ribbon cable.

@stux

Everyone knows you need to install your CPU heatsink before you put in your memory DIMMs, so it's near impossible to get your hands in place to push them in.

@stux Reminds me of these old card board computers we used to build as a kid. I also built one with a CD tray made from a broken jewel case (finally a use for all those rather useless AOL CDs we had back then) and also built a flat screen from cardboard with exchangeable screen pictures I drew on paper (just had to slide them in from the side).

@stux Is this called an unboxing event? 😇

@stux the graphic card got me 🤣
Nice job !!!

@stux Amateur - they're going to be running into all kinds of problems with that build unless they properly secure the SSD.

@stux I feel like there's something off about that system ... OH! I got it! That ram isn't keyed! Gonna cause the mysterious smoke to appear if they get it wrong!

@stux who wants composable architecture when we already have compostable architecture…

@stux Finally, a affordable GPU in this market

@stux

Hey I wonder if there's a Lego server! :flan_laugh:

@stux The little flip the CPU orientation made me smile. Remember when chips DIDN'T have the orientation pin missing and you could actually put a chip in the wrong way?

I smoked a 387 that way.

Anyways, this is a nice setup. I wouldn't try overclocking, and DEFINITELY wouldn't try liquid cooling.

@stux

"Windows 11 not supported on this machine"

Fine I'll install Linux.

" GPU:0: Idling display engine timed out"

Son of a B****!!!

:blobcatgiggle:

@stux
And nVidia still charges $1000 for that GPU.

@stux If only that actually worked! 😉 😂

@stux

Nice, these must be the server boards German government services use!

@stux The RAM doesn't even have notches. There goes my immersion. 😜

@stux don't opt for water cooling, it could ruin everything 💧

@stux looks more like a gaming-PC ;)

@stux my dog would have enjoyed eating that

@stux The way things are going up there, this could be how #Google ends up.

@lahosken @stux And in fact, Cardboard was my first exposure to VR, and it was an eye opener, no pun intended, of course.

@lauren @lahosken @stux honestly for the price point cardboard was pretty dang remarkable, especially once they added the wand.

@nullagent @lahosken @stux Even though Google effectively abandoned the VR market (hey, we're Google!) their Cardboard/Daydream work was still crucial as a proof of concept, and kudos to the VR team at the time there for that.

@stux I finally understand what they meant with Google Cardboard

@stux

it's going to be the fastest server yet...you'll be able to run Grok on it!

@artisanrox @stux my favorite game to play
"Is That the Name of a Retro Game or The Name of a Techbro Startup?"
Is it a retro game?

@jackemled @stux

nope, it's the name of Elno's fail-AI on the birdsite :deadbird:

@artisanrox @stux Techbro Startup!! I'm terrible at this game!

@stux @Extelec From the thumbnail I thought it was a motherboard covered in dust and I when I clicked play I expected to see air being used to clean it off!

@fozztexx @stux How to tell me you have been playing with retro computers for a long time, without....

@stux bruh is that the 4090 super TI 2 ?
