Even Small are Great Here (5 Years in the )

We’ve lived in the Netherlands for 5 years now and we’ve been to a lot of small towns and cities in that time. The thing that surprised us the most is that there’s good urbanism pretty much everywhere.

Yeah how cool :nkoCool:

Here in the you can just bike under castles, no problem!

@notjustbikes

Ohh another little example I would love to point out!

Our elderly neighbour is around 90 years old now and he still goes on his bike to the store every single day! 💪 :RideBikes:

A way to stay in shape and get out the house he says, plus it's nice :ed_grin:

How about that!

@notjustbikes

@stux @notjustbikes What about electric bikes? Is that popular? Cause I was thinking transforming mine into one.

@rominator @notjustbikes We do have one and it's AMAZING! :ed_grin:

Not for our neighbour though, it's a little too dangerous, and i agree

@stux @notjustbikes also would point out there needs to be some regulation for keeping them safe. Nr of old ppl dying in bike accidents has risen dramatically in NL. Idk, maybe it should be required for them to wear a helmet/other protection but NL should do more to protect elderly ppl

@Moldoteck @notjustbikes That has become a bigger issue indeed..

Our neighbour refuses to use an E bike exactly for that reason

A helmet would be a good idea but making it mandatory could bring a lot of unhappy people who don't want one if that's the case :blobcatgiggle: (like me)

@stux @notjustbikes ya, it's hard to take a decision. On one hand wearing a helmet is cumberstone, on another- old ppl have slower reaction and more likely to loose equilibrium. Maybe there are other options like fat tire bikes or idk, it's just sad these ppl die in such accidents

@stux @notjustbikes Reminds me of a 96yo friend of my grandmothers. Every week she’d bike to city centre in Copenhagen (around 10 km x2) to assist on a youth helpline

@stux @notjustbikes so did my father three months ago, then he fell off a ladder and is moving from hospital to care center since. Old age can be really hard. :mastosob:

@stux @notjustbikes Since riding a bike is more energy efficient than walking, anyone who can walk can bike with caveat that cycling need better balance control and fastre processing of what you se eto react to obstacles since you're going faster.

@stux @notjustbikes my neighbor (80, incl some motor problems)) is very sad.
He cannot bike anymore; at least not as he defines biking: 2 100 km rides a week. He had to give that up last year, now he is really struggling with only mtb and City bike rides. It is not easy to adjust and downshift for anybody, and he cannot leave for another country to fix his problem😪
Btw: he had sold his car, he cannot drive safely at those speeds anymore.

@burne @stux @notjustbikes thanks! I already tried to get him on any trike, he was not open to that.

@CyclesSmiles @stux @notjustbikes I mean, that's getting old for you, isn't it? The number of things you can do just slowly drops and drops.

@CyclesSmiles @stux @notjustbikes i just visited a small town in the Netherlands and saw an old couple (around 80-90) just zooming on the road together,
Honestly more romantic then France.

@Klein @stux @notjustbikes that is how we perceive life here as 'normal'.
The sad part about this is that we (NL) see don't any of it as special, so nobody here is proud about it, enjoys it consciously, or tries to export it to other parts of EU. I wish we (EU) could have this as normal (but am still busy to upgrade our home town to the Dutch standaard).

@CyclesSmiles @stux @notjustbikes
In Israeli highschools there's an expedition to Poland to truly make students comprehend the holocaust, (lets not disect that fact right now) the Netherlands should try it by sending their kids to Los Angeles to truly comprehend bad urban design.

@stux @notjustbikes my dad is 78. He switched to a pedal-assist e-bike when he turned 70. He can happily do 30km a day 2 or 3 times a week. He goes dancing twice a week too. He's a very 'young' 78 year old because of it 🤗🚴

@stux @notjustbikes
the cool part is that you have castles to bike under.

@stux @notjustbikes i just watched this video 10 minutes ago, from Not Just Bikes

@stux @notjustbikes they copied it from the Sackturm in Warburg!

@stux @notjustbikes what an amazing country.

I just got back from a week in Utrecht. The country is designed for people, what a great idea.

Myself and my partner will be moving over next year, CANNOT wait!

It will be Prima! 🙌
