Shit. I can’t imagine what teaching must be like these days 😟

My class is made up of nothing but dumbasses - it's horrible, coming from a student.

@stux honestly i would whup every little fucker in that class, which is why i don't teach kids

@sonyablanck @stux I can’t imagine getting away with that trash talk in my days at school.

@jeaniesalad @stux just like, let me tell you what happened to my shtetl you little shit

@stux yeah. It’s not great. Take an online culture of inflammatory statements and add influences like Kanye West and A***** T***.

@adam @stux ???? I can’t fill in the blank. Alex Trebeq??

@emacsen @chucker @david_colquhoun @stux @SummerDay @adam @TheezyThee Both things are true. I speak as a targeted Asian American. Trump didn't start racism or antisemitism, but he enabled, engaged, and inflamed for political purposes. We don't ignore Hitler's role just because he wasn't alone in persecuting Jews, LGBT, Romani. But, to our peril, we do ignore the antisemitism in the US that denied Jewish refugees safe haven and denied American Jews equality. We can face both truths, I believe.

@pattykimura @chucker @david_colquhoun @stux @SummerDay @adam @TheezyThee

100% that there is a role that certain politicians play in rhetoric or policy, but what disturbs me greatly is how often I hear "it's a right wing problem" from the left, and "it's a left wing problem" from the right, both tokenizing and trivializing antisemitism to score political points.

@david_colquhoun @stux Sadly, as bad as he was, Trump is merely a symptom, not a cause.

@stux An African American....who Hitler has a huge hatred for such a race...said that....Hitler....was awesome!? WTF

And they seem to base their arguments by claims. The holocaust never happened...because the director is jewish and is therefore biased by default, and lying about it? Twitter and social media seems to be peoples only source of 'education' these days. How can they deny history that has so much content from so many different sources?

And I thought my school was bad

@Shredd_Tone @stux it's multi-pronged. We've got Facebook where everyone was encouraged to be a journalist, the internet in its entirety where you have to dig deep to find legit sources & use a lot of critical thinking, trunt working to delegitimize the press, & the slow death of the press because no one wants to pay for news and good reporting.

@FlorriePuddlefoot That's a very good point you've made there actually. We could take news seriously, but as well as that we don't (counting myself) really bother to pay anyone for their work to report good content.; despite wanting honest and trustworthy news to expand and rely on.

I got start subscribing to fix that

@Shredd_Tone @stux
Maybe worthwhile contrasting how much unstructured screen time connected to a market driven world wide web you had compared to recent kids.

In the same way that cigarette ads may have featured for you and biased the behaviour of you and your peers, todays kids are getting exposure to Nazi thinking on their screens.

@skua It's not that I like to be too dependable on one news outlet 100%, I have to look at a variety of perspectives from different sources. I never want to take things by 'paint by numbers.' I'm aware that news outlets can manufacture or sensationalise their content, you always need to stay on your toes; especially within Social media.

It's not always BS though, depends if they are doing it fairly or not, and who's it's really benefiting; and that's if they can do a good job doing it.

@stux I have five teachers in the family. Teaching has become incredibly difficult but not because the kids have changed. Like in politics, the fringe has been given a megaphone and kids are always listening and emulating adults. Especially the whackos.

Also, I found that many boys in their prepubescent years are fascinated by authoritarianism; the loudness, bulling, uniforms, the spectacle. Most out grow it.

@Rakielxx71 @stux I agree. I think one can draw a pretty direct through-line...

I suppose this culture has existed in some form for most of the post-WW2 era. Some argue it is more prevalent now, but that's hard to determine. To me the scariest part is that this culture is fundamentally an anti-politics; it doesn't stand for anything, and yet, it is becoming the core tenant of a political party.

@stux that's absolutely gross and so damn scary

@stux shit like that would get kids into the principal's office to be picked up by their parents - for all the right reasons.

But I guess that's because such felonies ain't taken lightly and might get child services to have a serious conversation with said parents...

@stux can confirm, even as an adult and even amongst friends and family I would have pegged as more tolerant, antisemitism and racism are back in “fashion”. I’m constantly shocked by some of the things my friends and family now suddenly think are ok to say.

@stux This is a very sad time when the horrible past is forgotten or perverted. I live 25 minutes away from the concentration camp Dachau - they all should visit at some point.

@darkcruix @stux I was gonna suggest something like this too. Sometimes they have to see the history directly to see how shocking it is.

@bardicblogger @darkcruix @stux The DC holocaust museum is great. I get chills every time and have gone more than once.

@stux I'm sorry it's not an educated response but FUUCK. OMG I would be so angry I don't know what I'd do..

@stux this is horrifying. I live in , but I expect the situation is likely similar here, too. I feel like this should be a top priority.

@schwinghamer @stux

As a Jew in Canada, I can tell you that I suspect the situation in Canada is a little different, but not radically so.

@stux 💔 I’m not entirely suprised given how this misinformed, disgusting hate has spread online, amplified by loud voices. But still awful to read about young minds being corrupted like this.

@stux And this is why I stopped using Twitter the second Elon took over. Online environments are allowing and even encouraging this kind of stuff.

My best friend is a gamer and only plays 1-person stuff bc he says the online forums are absolutely rampant with antisemitism, homophobia, and racism

@stux One thing that I think we don't talk about nearly enough is how fucking stupid Hitler and the Nazis were. They thought they could fight two wars at the same time and win. They thought they could build a big granite city in the middle of a swamp (look up New Germania.) They designed all sorts of ridiculous "super weapons" that mostly killed the Nazis who used them. And Hitler in his private life was *incredibly* cringe.

@stux Which is to say - high schoolers who say shit like this are probably doing it to be edgy and empathy isn't edgy. But telling them about how lame the Nazis were might get through to some of them.

@SamuelBepis @stux I see this as a common misunderstanding. Many of these Nazis were not stupid. If they all would have been stupid, they wouldn't have been that dangerous.

It is the highly intelligent malicous people that are dangerous. Don't underestimate Nazis.

Göbbels once used an embedded american journalist to show him that a roumor of an atrocity that he placed himself was untrue. While most other roumors were true. An highly intelligent scroupelous lyer.

@herdsoft we shouldn't underestimate them, but we shouldn't glamorize them either. A lot of media portrayals of Nazis depicts them as these hyper-competant evil geniuses in cool uniforms and that's exactly why edgy teens find them appealing.

@SamuelBepis Interesting point, indeed.

But you wrote "how fucking stupid Hitler and the Nazis were". And not all of them were stupid.

I don't think that Elon Musk is stupid. And yet I dispise him very much.

@herdsoft Okay, to be less flippant: we do not talk enough about all the stupid things they did, and if we did this it might make them seem less cool to teenagers who are susceptible to right-wing propaganda.

Elon Musk is another person who's made a lot of bad decisions while being glamorized by people who view him as some kind of genius mastermind.

@stux Fascism, like religion, does not deal with facts, only doctrine, which is why it is so hard to combat.

@bobjmsn @stux Ot is very hard to combat, yes no doubt about this, but one should never give up doing this nevertheless.

@bobjmsn @stux and goes scurrying for the dark when confronted by light. Never stop pushing back. If history tells us anything it is Fascists only win if those around them are silent.

@stux. These are children who need to learn the truth. It is not their fault. The fault lies with those with power who spread antisemitism (i.e. hatred of Soros, Jewish space lasers, conflatiion of Zionism with Judaism, Trump's antisemitic tropes about Jews and money, evangelical "friends of Israel" who want us all to move to Palestine to hasten the apocalypse). Children are the victims, not the perpetrators.

@stux

The poison is not slowly but steadily creeping into society, but is now -thanks to influencers, social media and QAnon, being poured over us with bucketloads. Unstoppable as it seems. If students are already beyond reason, it is mopping up with the tap open. We will somehow have to look for antidotes. Soon.

@stux That's how lacking education works. And no, I don't mean the children, since they don't know any better, but their uneducated or propaganda-indoctrinated (which basically means they're uneducated as they couldn't tell fiction from facts apart) parents. It's a dreamworld for capitalists. The uneducated masses shun minorities and look down on anyone they perceive to be below them in social status while the rich capitalists live in their gated communities with high -level education and all the luxuries they could dream of.

On top of that, all the lies, propaganda tales, and fabrications are further spread through social media, working towards splitting society apart even more while fanning the hatred against particular groups of people for being slightly different from what is labeled by media as mainstream.

All of this goes back to education and the lack thereof, and since education is mostly responsibility of the state in a democracy, it merely shows how much the power of the state has already been eroded by neo-liberal individualism.
