That last sentence is fun though:

"Some servers are having fun with the idea of verification in a less-than-official fashion. For example, the mstdn.social server lets you add blue-and-white checkmarks and other emoji to your display name if you’d like, which make you look verified, even though these don’t mean anything. (Sort of like Twitter’s new verification system! But for free!)"

Free :verified: for everyone, it doesn't mean shit anyway yaaaay

@stux

I think the idea of verification via innately personal means (AKA, your specific website) is totally alien to the people who *really* should know better. It's really not hard to understand how DNS and web presence works, but this is a sign that the "Platform Era" of the web has corrupted almost ever basic aspect of the Internet.

@robert It's even simpler!

Just by pasting the link to their Mastodon on Twitter for example and do the same here on Mastodon but with your Twitter URL it's done already :flan_laugh:

Website same deal! 💪

@stux Yeah, this is what is so weird about the various "FeDiFiEd" accounts and their boosters here. You have the means to tell people what your source of truth is, right on your own twitter account! Why on earth would you trust middle brokers?!

@stux hey it’s a typo of sorts. Accidentally “mastodon” instead of “mstdn”— I’ll fix that. It’s been a long couple of weeks!! Not sure the public shaming was in order :( feel free to ping me anytime

@Sarahp Oh hey! ❤️ No worries at all! :cat_hug_triangle:

It was not meant as public shaming :catblush: I am so sorry!

Actually I was very surrpised by the mention :cat_hug_triangle:

(I'll edit the original toot :ablobwink: )

@Sarahp@mastodon.social @stux@mstdn.social i love the "Sort of like Twitter’s new verification system! But for free!"- part btw :otter_hug:

@igwigg @Sarahp :blobcatgiggle: Right! Laughed so hard about it :flan_laugh:

@stux and there are a few #techcrunch reporters on here too, including @fredericl, @romaindillet, @bheater, @zackwhittaker, & me as well as @riptari

@stux yes, @riptari is! She's fantastic, has been doing great birdsite reporting.

@stux I find it enormously amusing that they messed the image credits while your real credits are in the picture itself. This is golden. Have a marvellous day.

@mmasnick Can you see Stux post above my comment?

@mmasnick Fuckkkk sorry got the wrong tech...something or other.

@TenTonHeart ah gotcha. I wasn't sure if you were implying there was something else here interesting for me, or if you thought I worked for TC.

@stux

Wait, you're not stux@mastodon.com!?

This isn't the official Mastodon server!?

You mean to tell me I've just been posting things to unofficial strangers instead of the official ones!?!?

@crossdavidl :blobcatgiggle: well, it's my account!

But only for testing federation stuff from mastodon.social :cat_hug_triangle:

Hahaha, that didn't make any sense at all

@stux The ability to verify links is not user-friendly enough :(

Mastodon developers should see how Discord implemented link verification

@stux it’s wild to me how people are still clinging to a useless, meaningless thing.

I got the blue tick on Twitter waaaaay back when they gave it to “notable” (cough) accounts and the only thing it ever did for me was act like a homing beacon for trolls. Gooooood riddance

@ambercadabra Haha indeed :blobcatgiggle:

It's kinda fun to see, almost every big 'Twitter migration' (we had some) many users want the :verified: and are proud at first but remove it after some time :blobcatgiggle:

I guess they learn here on the Fedi it doesnt matter

@stux I decided otters are way way better

Because otters

@ambercadabra Yaaay! :blobcatgiggle:

I always change depending on the moment but mostly it's a ZAP! for energy! :blobcatgiggle:

@stux @ambercadabra I’m enormously proud of my blue kite mark. Makes me feel like a high flyer … :)

@stux but I did chuckle at a bunch of folks doing almost tongue in cheek or making the blue tick into like a coffee cup or whatnot. 🫠

@ambercadabra @stux Say what you will about Twitter, but they verified Jesus

@stux @ygalanter well it only took a couple millennia

@ygalanter @ambercadabra Jesus did it himself haha! Like you can here on Mastodon :001:

@stux @ygalanter I HEREBY ANOINT MYSELF LORD AND SAVIOR AND QUEEN OF ALL THE THINGS :verified_flashing: :coolified: :fake_verified: :verif_androgine: :antiverified:

am i doing this right

@stux @ygalanter @ambercadabra wow you even have fancy animated ones. i’m jealous. haha

@shawncreed @ygalanter @stux your instance might too. Never know. :)

@stux @ambercadabra there is a difference - on Mastodon it's free😀

@ambercadabra Thank you for the tip on adding notes - I didn't now that!!

@organicbotanic I didn’t either! Only on web interface I believe (at least not possible in the mobile app I use)

@stux I didn’t, but was tempted, to pay the £6.99 to impersonate Marjorie Taylor Greene and post socialism.

@stux if you ask me, you should tripple down onthis and make a full on ad
"Tired of Elon Musk charing $8 for a useless checkmark? We're got a solution for you! Come to mstdn.social and get as many checkmarks as you want, each for the low low price of $0 a month *insert some fast spoken fine print at the end*"

@stux how does “paste links on your profile and on another site” work?

@stux I’ll gladly donate $8/mo to you for a bogus :verified:

@stux I never cared before, but now that it’s meaningless and funny, I kinda want one.

@stux I was about ready to fork over my $8.00

@jbonewald :blobcatgiggle: it's free forever and even more! :blobcheerwitch:

:verified_neko: :pudding_verified: :breadified:

@stux so, does having a free check the equivalent of having a vintage uniform shirt with 'Fred' (when that may or may not be one's name) stitched into it like late 90s hipsters?

@stux I mean is it cool, or not cool? I couldn't tell back then, and I can't tell now.
