# Russia is sick: Russia burning off $10m worth of gas every day - BBC News
Aerial images have shown a Russian energy facility near its border with Finland burning off supplies of natural gas worth approximately $10m US dollars.
It's said the plant has been burning off gas, which would have previously been exported to Germany, for months.
The burning has also triggered a warning from climate change experts with its close proximity to the Arctic Circle.
I'm starting to hate the country more and more each day.. what a sh*thole
What would you suggest they would do with the surplus gas after being hit by sanctions?
@stux If russia is a threat to climate change quest (other than peace and human rights as a whole), then it is a threat to the world. I wonder why western public opinion is not considering the idea of neutralizing this threat
Russia is a big oil producer so undoubtedly responsible in a large measure for climate change.
However it is clear the US is a larger problem in that respect.
Neutralizing the "Russian" threat? The western "public opinion" is pretty much for it. Sadly some go as far as considering nuclear war which is completely mad and unacceptable.
@stux Here is how russian propagandists are talking about Sholz and germans on russian media outlets, basically calling them Nazi. Paving the way for the next "de-nazification" special military operation?
"According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the volume of U.S. natural gas reported to be vented and flared in 2019 reached its highest average annual level since 1961, at 1.48 Bcf/d."
1.48 Billion cubic feet. Per day.
The Russian national oil company Gazprom is flaring 4.34 million cubic meters per day according to CNN. This is about 153,265,653.6 cubic feet per day. Compared with USA, 1,480,000,000 per day.
153 million cf per day for Gazprom, 1480 million cf per day US.
Just sayin'.

@stux Unfortunately, one can't just stop extracting #naturalgas and it also can't be stored easily. You either have to transport it away via #pipeline (or liquify it if you have the machinery), pump it directly into the atmosphere - or burn it. #Russia can't sell most of it's #gas anymore, doesn't have the machinery to liquify it and pumping it directly into the air is even more devastating than burning it.
In other words: Burning the gas is an effect of the sanctions vs Russia.
