I know I posted this before but I'm gonna do it again to make sure it reaches as wide as possible..

The following domain: "d-fens.systems" went live a little while back and when checking out the instance it has 2 accounts. The admin(that follows known racists in the Fedi) and a 'FollowBot' that automatically follows as much accounts as possible.

Why would this be an issue you say?

Well! A while ago some bad actors made via the exact same way a follow bot that added people into "groups" that they thinked we belonged in like: "gay, lefist, activist, trans" etc etc!

These lists can only be used for targeting people online and we DO NOT WANT THIS in any way!

I again, I urge admins to domain block "d-fens.systems" ASAP.

@stux I'm thinking of maybe just writing a rule against any follow bots. That would cover this instance, and future ones.

I don't see a good reason for a robot to follow accounts.

Fediblock recommend! Important!

@stemid Good point! I think I’ll do the same👌🏻♥️

In the past it did make sense to create connections between instances but these days we have relays for that so follow bots are kinda stalking-ish :yikes:

Fediblock recommend! Important!

@stemid @stux Maybe there needs to be a way for users to block follows from instances. Even if we report it, some admins may not yake it seriously

Fediblock recommend! Important!

@birdlico @stux @stemid There is virtually no way to block ppl from following your public posts... Even if you don't want it, they're public.....

Fediblock recommend! Important!

@birdlico
You can set your account on manual follow validation.

@stemid @stux

@stux
I'm actually thinking about using some method similar to a follow-bot (ideally following a whole instance instead of users).

I've migrated from framapiaf, all I see in local feed is myself, and in the global feed, it's mostly people I follow. I see proxy stuff in the mastodon settings, but I see no working proxy.

*ps: I won't do a peruser follow bot due to the spam it does. With a bit of luck, you can rollow all activity from users on a server*

@stemid

@stux @stemid

Also, blocking following won't prevent classification. I think the servers API don't need authentification. (message to only followed people won't be accessed, thought).

Fediblock recommend! Important!

@marius851000 @stemid you can also ‘stop’ delivery, in that case they won’t have anything I think!👌🏻♥️

Fediblock recommend! Important!

@marius851000 @stux use proper activitypub relays instead. That's how I got my tiny instance to have a very active federated timeline.

Fediblock recommend! Important!

@stemid

@stux

Oh, yes. When I said relay, I meant proxy (thought there some instance in particular I would like to follow instad of some totally random stuff). Still, the few relays I tried didn't worked, so I concluded that most of them are. Maybe I should spend some more time trying this (and hope my server can handle this)

Fediblock recommend! Important!

@stux I wonder how the bot categorized me hmm @stemid

Fediblock recommend! Important!

@stemid @stux I realize I'm relatively new to the Fediverse (as both a user and an operator) but I can potentially see the use as an aggregator, in very limited circumstances. I might be missing key concepts, however.

Looks like I joined at a very interesting time.

Fediblock recommend! Important!

@bluknight @stemid @stux It's not useful as an aggregator; federation already does that.

Unless you want to aggregate followers-only posts, in which case… no. Just don't. That's not okay.

Fediblock recommend! Important!

@wizzwizz4 @bluknight @stemid @stux

I did look at some followbots and some suggest adding #nobot hashtag to profile. It won't fix malicious bots, but at least there's some control for bots which respect it

It would be great to be able to add that as a default bio for new users

Fediblock recommend! Important!

@stemid @stux Interesting, is there a way in Mastodon to incorporate this rule?

Fediblock recommend! Important!

@pete I just mean a rule in the Mastodon admin interface giving me a reason to ban such instances. I don't think this should be done in the mastodon source code. It's up to each instance admin.

Fediblock recommend! Important!

@stemid Agreed, I didn’t know if you had written said rule already. If you did are you able to share it?

re: Fediblock recommend! Important!

@stemid @stux Pleroma supports Anti-Followbot policies, and I often recommend my users enable follow requests. In addition, bots are generally unlisted here, but if you come across an actor that is clearly a bot but not labeled one, you can alter its actor status.

You're also welcome to bring it to my attention.

re: Fediblock recommend! Important!

@stux good to know, thanks.

Fediblock recommend! Important!

@stux@mstdn.social uhm... no. You provide no evidence such lists existed.

Fediblock recommend! Important!

@loweel uhh no. If you read the toot you know why omfg.

Fediblock recommend! Important!

@stux@mstdn.social

the toot says, you want to block an instance because , since they use a followbot, this remembers you when a different instance did something bad.

that's not enough to block an instance.

Fediblock recommend! Important!

@loweel its a suspicion indeed and the chance is very big, like I said I’m not 100% sure and it’s a warning but you can do whatever you like 👌🏻 why reply at all lol?

Fediblock recommend! Important!

@jase @loweel Not even to mention that..

A creepy follow bot isn't enough I guess

Fediblock recommend! Important!

@stux@mstdn.social @jase@toots.hwl.li no, a bot following you is much less than a bad user following you.

Fediblock recommend! Important!

@loweel @stux and honestly you're going to be one on my blocklist too loweel seeing you're blatantly ignorant. A follow bot ran by a fricken probably neo-nazi, that has indeed a big likelihood to be used to group people into lists for targeted harassment purposes.. it's not fucking better than a bad user, when it's ran by a bad user FFS.

Cya weirdo 👋

Fediblock recommend! Important!

@jase @loweel Haha that weirdo blocked me after a rant haha!

What a person omg

Fediblock recommend! Important!

@stux @loweel@bbs.keinpfusch.net yup, fancy picking that hill to die on, complaining in a way that you're there controlling them what they do just because you happen to fediblock and pointing to others who fediblock something that they may probably want to block too.

Same as all those on 🐦 complaining about others like myself and so many of my moots that use sub to Block Together blocklists (in which there's plenty still about readily available thanks to theblockbot.

I have near to 1M blocked on my 🐦 account thanks to the blocklists.

Brexit shits, so many blocked,
Terfs, so many blocked,
Aphobes, so many blocked,
Nazis, so many blocked,
Anti-polyamorous bigots, so many blocked,
Exclusives, aka those against bi/mspec-lesbians etc, so many blocked,

And that's just some lol.

It's super nice that blocking whole instances here though can often mean that's 10s to 100s if not maybe 1000s or 10s of 1000s of nasties blocked in one go each time lmao

@diorama @stux added to the list. Another thing, ddns, dynamic DNS itself os worth adding to the blocks as it just causes havoc for federation.

@diorama @stux@mstdn.social

Btw Diorama, that custom font you have in your pinned post, custom fonts are inaccessible to screen reader users.

Translaters can understand them, but screen readers either ignore them or speak the random garbage that creates the fonts.

You too Stux I realise you have a custom font in your name plus your @stux@mastodon.coffee name.

Fediblock recommend! Important!

@stux@mstdn.social to underline the fediverse is kinda resistent to fascism, and to cancel culture too. This is why I answer.

You really ask people to block a whole instance, which traffic is pretti normal (just look at their local timeline), because you don't like the people the admin is following? Seriously?

I will NEVER give you such a power, and I repeat: POWER.

re: Fediblock recommend! Important!

@loweel @stux While I'm against blocking most of the times in this case I did block them:

The admin follows several accounts who either make racists jokes or use unconstitutional symbols like the black sun (§ 86a StGB in Germany).

I therefore have absolutely no trust that anything constructive will come from this server and to avoid any liability for myself I don't want to see any activity from them on my instance again.

If you can't trust the admin you can't trust the whole instance.
