The is so very amazing :fediverse: That's why I run a whole bunch of different services, something for everyone!

The things I host are:

  • mstdn.social
  • Pixey.org
  • Misskey.ai
  • PeerTube.TV
  • Mastodon.Coffee

If you would like to support me in paying the bills for all this, any help is very much appreciated :cat_hug_triangle:

@stux Do you think fediverse serverices should have a feature for book keeping? Optionally showing users the in and out so sysadmins can have transparency and be more direct about the costs they face?

I mean it'd also be super interesting to see who's running the cheapest server :blobcatcoffee:

@doctormo Hm.. not federated I think 🤔 :blobcatgiggle: But there are for sure some awesome FOSS book keeping stuff out there

@doctormo Ahh i like that!

There are some open issues for something like that already I think!

@doctormo
I would love to have something along those lines.

Like „this server will run out of money in X days. Donate now!“

A browser game I played used this. Like it.
Admins don't have to disclose concrete numbers (could be impossible due to NDA for special contract, for example)
@stux

@RyunoKi @stux Whatever is used, standardisation is how you drive down the cost of operating greater transparency. If for example a Free Software book keeping website was used, then a custom spin specially made for distributed service providers would be more economical.

Extra Ironic points if the book keeping site needs to have an indicator for funding because 300 mastodon admins use it, but it's run from some guys basement.

@doctormo
I can imagine that this could be hard.

I mean, compare the channels instance admins use to accept donations.

Do those sites offer integration?

If you would spun up something different, you're quickly entering payment provider territory (highly regulated) or refer to a service (PayPal, Stripe etc).
@stux

@RyunoKi @stux Almost all of them do, because money integration is quite important.

The unix philosophy should hold here: do one thing, and do it well. book keeping and taking money are two very different problems.

@doctormo
Sorry, double-entry bookkeeping system is running across my mind.
I consider them intertwined.
