I feel like people here on the Fediverse generally think a lot more about their posts than they do on Twitter, for example!

Over the years I have seen several examples of people who wonder whether or not to post things, but also many questions whether certain content is allowed or not. And I love this!

Even seen people putting extra effort to reduce file size for videos on PeerTube even to safe space :blobcathearts:

Like uh.. we are more "aware" of the content instead of blasting it out like a speaker on the bird :birdsite:

Thank you for that ❤️ :fediverse: :blobcathug:

@stux I have exactly the same feelings. I am not sure if it related to more privacy or the lack of my friends on Fedi but... it feels good to finally have a platform to actually not be afraid of speaking up.

@stux it's true I take time to read toots back before sending, and correct errors. So although I can delete and retoot (and I do) I seem to need to do it much less. There's less rush and more care here.

@stux I didn't at first, but have become more aware over the past few years because I unintentionally posted some hurtful things. What helped was that I changed the settings to say "Are you sure you want to boost ____ ?" And that helped me make those split second decisions. Plus having the option to CW posts that might be traumatic for others.

@stux I've experienced the same but in the opposite way, people posting more and more freely here because they aren't that scared of the public opinion or about some idiot coming to quote and bully you

@kogomi @stux or twitter banning you for saying "fuck off" to a nazi or transphobe

@LunaDragofelis @kogomi yup… while they are the ones fucking up double there :(

@LunaDragofelis @kogomi @stux that shit happened to me when it came to pedophile apologists. I'm starting to see the site go off the wayside against their own policies lately. Wouldn't be surprised if it goes down a la Backpage.

@LunaDragofelis @stux that's what I mean. You can't be sure what's right anymore on twitter, so many people default to not talk about such things...

@stux speaking of file size: how is it on mastodon, do videos/pictures get transcoded and/or optimized on the server side?

@fabiscafe They do! Local & remote media is all converted and stored! Unfortunately video quality of always going kinda fast downhill but it’s a social platform after all and no YT! :blobcatgiggle:

@stux thats good so there is no need to process them on my side if they are on the server side.

@stux @fabiscafe Too bad Mastodon does not convert images to WebP, which is smaller and prettier

@stux
So would you say using ImagePipe or some other app to compress images before posting is pointless (from your point of things like disk space)?
@fabiscafe

@grob @fabiscafe Hmm! Not exactly sure! :blobcatgiggle: I think it’s getting converted with imagemagik or something for ‘web ready’ and if Pipe does that also not sure it’s getting any less :thinktink: good q!

@stux Very true!

I wonder the nice atmosphere of the Fediverse might also have to do with the federated nature of the network of people.

That is: An instance-based neighbourhood of (presumably) like-minded people adhering to some code of conduct including blocked instances.

Maybe this could also be described as slightly more involved moderation (per instance) based on shared values

@floppy @stux Reminds me a bit of the early blogosphere when people went out of their way to communicate with fellow bloggers, guest post, share links, etc. It wasn't just content silos everywhere run by selfish "influencers"

@jaredwhite @floppy @stux Yes, yes! I've been having exactly the same feelings and experiences. So much more enjoyable. These place feels to be alive, open, cozy, positive, all at the same time. It reminds me of my favorite coffee shop back in Memphis 20 years ago. An inviting place to go to just be with people.

@floppy @stux @Dennyhenke Right! A term I just remembered which you don't really hear anymore is "netiquette" — feels to me like the fediverse culture actually makes that a thing again. I'm all for it—and cozy coffee shops too! 😄

@jaredwhite @stux @Dennyhenke
I also remember "netiquette" and when it was a thing! I think it added something healthy to communities. I wonder where it went.

@floppy Honestly, social media killed it. It used to be unthinkable to post pictures of people online without their permission, for instance.

@floppy @stux @Dennyhenke Heh, I just saw someone use the term "fediquette" — love it! 🙌

@jaredwhite @stux @Dennyhenke

*checks*
Indeed, #fediquette is also used at times! It should be a thing. :)

@stux couldn’t agree with this more. I feel interactions here are more human than in social networks like Twitter where people race for the most clickbaity post or smarty thread.

@pepicrft Right! 😮 And esp these days with all crypto bro's on the bird :blobcatgiggle:

@stux I think the federated structure also tends to filter out low-quality posts from other instances.

@stux
Tell me you haven't seen my shitposting without telling me you haven't seen my shitposting.
