@rbassett Well, yes, absolutely (I put in several years of study towards a PhD myself) - but there's that, and then there's the kind of person who, for example, uses some conspiracy theorist's YouTube video as proof that a vaccine can alter your DNA.

Most "you're wrong" peeps haven't even Googled - at best (!?) they've heard somebody they don't really remember say something, at worst & more likely, they're just making sh*t up.
@stephenfarrow So I was quite astonished that in the science of climate economy this can actually be true ( the being wrong part).
Doesn't help the peer review system seems to be quite narrow cast there: no climate scientists were bothered anytime for a review. That would explain somewhat.
@stephenfarrow@mstdn.social you say this like there aren't fields of study that are on the totally wrong track.
I'd trust any trans persons experience over a psych "specialist" on the matter, same with any chronic pain patient.

Yep, as a Maths teacher pointing out the correct way to do Maths, I got sick of "But Google/ChatGPT/Wolfram Alpha says..." so I wrote a whole thread with textbooks, historical references, proofs, the works https://dotnet.social/@SmartmanApps/110897908266416158 and now... I get "Well the textbook is wrong then!" (sigh). Who knew that some random programmer at Google knew more about Maths than Maths teachers and Maths textbooks and someone who literally wrote a book about the history of Maths notation...
