@stephenfarrow

You think that the letters
at the end of your name
give you some divine insight
but we're all mostly the same.

When it comes to big issues
that face humanity
degrees can give confidence
where one should have humility

(original. Also, for the record I have a PhD, but this poem stems from the frustration I feel when folks--especially in my field of academia--use their credentials as an excuse to make conclusions well outside of their areas of expertise)

@rbassett Well, yes, absolutely (I put in several years of study towards a PhD myself) - but there's that, and then there's the kind of person who, for example, uses some conspiracy theorist's YouTube video as proof that a vaccine can alter your DNA.

@stephenfarrow I resent this kind of misrepresentation!

...

Most "you're wrong" peeps haven't even Googled - at best (!?) they've heard somebody they don't really remember say something, at worst & more likely, they're just making sh*t up.

@stephenfarrow So I was quite astonished that in the science of climate economy this can actually be true ( the being wrong part).
Doesn't help the peer review system seems to be quite narrow cast there: no climate scientists were bothered anytime for a review. That would explain somewhat.

@stephenfarrow@mstdn.social you say this like there aren't fields of study that are on the totally wrong track.

I'd trust any trans persons experience over a psych "specialist" on the matter, same with any chronic pain patient.

Arguing on the Internet
- A.Harris

You went to university
and studied this for years.
You've written research papers
which were then reviewed by peers.
You've thought about this every day
for goodness knows how long.

But I just looked on Google
and I'm sorry but you're wrong.

@stephenfarrow The downside of having so much information at your fingertips is that it can be easy to think you know more than you actually do. Gotta remember to stay humble! ❤️

But,by the way, have an academic grade don't transform you in a true specialist in It

An adaptation with a focus on pacing:

You studied at school,
You've learned this for years.

You've written your papers,
Reviewed by your peers.

You've worked on this daily,
For who knows how long.

I searched it on Google.
I'm sorry. You're wrong.

@stephenfarrow Google, pshh, that's for old geezers. Nowadays, people ask AI.
