The #OCCRP, the largest organised network of investigative media in the world, hid the extent of its links with the US government, this investigation can reveal. Washington supplies half of its budget, has a right to veto its senior staff, and funds investigations focussing on Russia and Venezuela. Yann Philippin and Stefan Candea report.
@mediapart Any comment on this, @rysiek ?
@spoon @mediapart it's like this RT segment from some years ago when they "discovered" that OCCRP is largely funded by US government money, by… dramatically scrolling to the website footer.
I haven't worked at OCCRP since 2019, so no clue how the funding structure looks today. That said, I know the quality of work done by investigative journalists writing for OCCRP, and I know that quality of work defends itself.
I do wish more sources of funding were available to investigative journalism.
@spoon @mediapart OCCRP was never hiding its funding. You can find all the institutional donors listed here:
https://www.occrp.org/en/about-us/who-supports-our-work
You should of course make up your own mind on how you treat their reporting based on that.
And if you think such funding structure is a problem, donating to your favorite investigative journalism outlet is a fantastic way of doing something about it.
Investigative journalism is unfortunately very expensive to do well.
@rysiek @mediapart Thank you; that is helpful. I have seen really good work done by OCCRP, too.
I suppose that can be true, and it can also be true that they should consider becoming more independent, given their mission. Maybe perks for members, rather than just donations, and *removing 3rd party tracking of visitors to the donor page*, would be a way to increase revenue.
On this, the upcoming Webinar for $25 is a good idea! I'll sign up if I can do it while blocking their trackers.
@spoon yeah, while I was there I was able to stop trackers from infesting the site. Oh well. Can't win them all.
