@rysiek@mstdn.social this article gives me the same vibes as that one cuphead review

@rysiek yeah this platform is TOTALLY dead /s

@rysiek Mastodon is crumbling, and many blame it's creator

@rysiek
Musk buying Twitter was a big help, though.

@rysiek ...the lack of reading of any of the extremely basic information about Mastodon that was, I'm pretty sure, /on/ the sign-up page he used, it's truly impressive.

@rysiek *scrolls down to his bio* wait how the tusk do you have these roles and this experience without knowing what open-source software is?

@rysiek I... Okay, I know this was years ago, but I'm pretty sure the bio is from back then, and I... it's impressive in the worst way?

@skysailor no no see he is a social media expert. What do you not understand.

@rysiek

“Twitter has grown about all it ever will and is struggling to please investors and drag its stock price back up out of the basement.
But it's still our Twitter and when looked at in comparison to Mastodon, it looks good.”

*hooks thumbs in suspenders and gently whistles* yep, I remember when they said that vaudeville was dead! Just you wait, the new generation will go ape for tumblin’!

@rysiek
Reading the article I just kept thinking..."So fuck off back to Twitter then?"
I'll stay here without the Nazis myself. But hey, at least Shatner will be able to find you...right?

@rysiek honestly, from what I understand about the 2017 version of Mastodon, this is a pretty solid take.

Mastodon has matured a LOT since then. The federation clearly tripped him up quite a bit, but I took a lot of the article as constructive criticism at worst.

Either way, it's come very far. I still hate "toots", though. That's one of the single worst things about this platform. Can we just come up with a different name???

@BiggestBulb @rysiek

Hmm, instead of toots:

tells
twinks
tweeds
tfeds (cute, but hard to pronounce unless you're Welsh)
twats (hmm,maybe not)

The possibilities are almost endless :)

@RaePatterson @rysiek I'm always down for more twinks in my life!

@BiggestBulb @rysiek when your top arguments are the product names, terminology and federation, you're off for a pretty bad start.

It was quite laughable, and one thing I gained from it is next time I see a tech article written by Lance Ulanoff I'll know in advance it's going to be a crop of shit.

@BiggestBulb @rysiek Nah. I was there in 2017 and I can tell you that was also a stupid take then as well.

@BiggestBulb @rysiek

The fact that they've officially been called "posts" for years now, and we still call them "toots" is all the demonstration I need that "toots" is the vastly superior name.

well, that and just the fact that it's innately obvious.

Toot!

@dragonfrog @BiggestBulb @rysiek
Only native English speakers complain about #Toots, and #mastodon is not exclusively #English speaking.

@andresortizmasso only *some* native English speakers complain about it, in fact.

@dragonfrog @BiggestBulb

@BiggestBulb I thought toots was just a joke name, do people really call them toots and not posts?

@atocci @rysiek yeah, "toots" is the official name unfortunately 😅 it just sounds like Mastodon farts to me

@BiggestBulb

> yeah, "toots" is the official name unfortunately

It's not and hasn't been for years.

It's a term some of us here use and find cute, but there is nothing stoping you from calling them whatever you wish. A lot of people call them, simply, "posts".

@atocci

@rysiek @atocci huh, apparently it is retired, but only for about 2 years...

reddit.com/r/Mastodon/comments

Guess I missed the news that day 🤷‍♂️ to be fair, I guess the whole time I've been around actually ON Mastodon it's not been toots so... I have no excuse 🫠

@BiggestBulb @rysiek @atocci - deleted my toot/post as i saw you linked this

@BiggestBulb @atocci @rysiek

it just sounds like Mastodon farts to me

so it's good :3

@atocci @BiggestBulb @rysiek it was a joke name that hbomberguy came up with and rochko implemented. it was reverted to "posts" a few years ago

@rysiek Well done, Mastodon! But I mainly feel old now...

@rysiek Pretty sure "not being found online by William Shatner" is a good thing.

@rysiek I feel like William Shatner's ability to use anything is a bad metric of its usefulness 😂

@amberage @rysiek I feel like it’s an excellent inverse metric.

@rysiek @Alice What a bizarre article. The author seems to have no idea how Mastodon works.

@Kayla @rysiek @Alice What I learned from this article:
- Instances exist for load balancing and no other reason
- If I use my full name on social media then nobody can impersonate me
- It is important that William Shatner can find me at all times

@SirLich @Kayla @rysiek I came to Mastodon to hide from William Shatner.

@wleisner @SirLich @Kayla @rysiek Do you think if we say William Shatner's name three times we're going to Beetlejuice him over to Mastodon?

@Alice
It's already been said over three times in this thread!!!
@wleisner @SirLich @Kayla @rysiek

@ColesStreetPothole @Kayla @rysiek @Alice An expert who does not understand the concept of federation and instead chalks it down as a certain weakness?

Yeah, right.

The one thing he mentioned there that I find a major issue with #MastodonWebUI, that one he didn't state as an issue: "It looks and feels like Twitter." :-P

Also, what a sad world where "fully chronological timelines" is a feature uncommon enough to be worth mentioning.

@ColesStreetPothole @Kayla @rysiek @Alice

Always wanted to be an expert.

So I have added 'tech and social media expert' to my bio as well

@rysiek love how this guy keeps looking directly at the concept of instances and refuses to understand its the entire point

@heatherhorns_lite @rysiek "Mastodon is so popular right now that it can't support all the potential users on one platform" as the explanation for why there are instances, lmao

@rysiek like a bad wine that already turned to vinegar.

@rysiek

“I registered on the upstart social media platform using, as I always do, my full name: "LanceUlanoff" to protect it from potential social media identity poachers (they're everywhere).” 🤣

@rysiek that article is written by someone who takes them self waay too serious. Djeez. 😅

@astrojuanlu @rysiek lol!
I can wait for kids in 20 years to come across this whole 'vision pro' thing with all the middle aged men and laugh themselves to sleep in the refugee tents over it.

@Lazarou @astrojuanlu @rysiek best bit of futurism I've seen in some time.

@astrojuanlu how is it that anything made by Big Tech gets white-glove treatment and breathless endorsements from this kind of venerable experts, and anything built by a community is immediately penned? :thaenkin:

@rysiek @astrojuanlu I think John might have forgotten to give him a "gift" when he invited him to the Mastodon launch party.

@rysiek Gee Lance really doesn't get it does he. But he comes from the planet of V. P. s.
