The eruption of a new volcano near Grindavík, has finally started.

Just to make this very clear: everyone, and most house pets, had been evacuated from Grindavík weeks ago. It is not clear how close to the actual town this is, but at least rest assured nobody is in danger.

Sometimes we put on a fireplace video or Ron Swanson drinking whiskey.

But not today.

We went to the Perlan hill in Reykjavík to have a better view. We were not the only people who had that idea — got kinda picnic-y in the middle of the night. Fun!

I brought my :bluetooth: speaker.

And put on the Lord of the Rings soundtrack.

It had to be done.

(yes, photo quality is crap, Fairphone 4 camera is a potato when it comes to night photos; but that nicely avoids privacy issues around people in the photo!)

Here's a link to my very old (2.5 years!) thread with photos from the previous eruption site near Grindavík:

That eruption was in some ways similar, and in some ways different. Similar, because it's roughly the same location, and roughly the same kind of eruption.

Different, because this time the fissure is 5km long, and the lava flow is 10× greater than during the previous eruptions in the area.

@rysiek lol that rules. Can’t wait to see this, we fly in on 26th

@remote_orb I fly out this Wednesday. Otherwise I would have offered to get a coffee or something. :blobcatcoffee:

When do you fly back out?

@remote_orb haha, I am flying in on the 1st late night. Coffee might be possible!

@wcbdata yeah, it's about 45km by road from here. So a wheeled transport is preferable.

@rysiek Pretty dramatic! Sometimes night vision ruins the contrast and you have to go tweak afterward.
