A kind observation that exclusively calling this place "Mastodon" has a bit similar energy as saying "I just sent a GMail."
"Fediverse" (or "fedi") is a more inclusive, general term.

Words mean what the user intends them to mean and not the clinical definition or origin. As long as the meaning is understood then imho it is presumptious to try and correct the user.
Technical discussions are different. Exactness is important and you don't use generics to replace specifics. Horses for courses.
