A kind observation that exclusively calling this place "Mastodon" has a bit similar energy as saying "I just sent a GMail."

"Fediverse" (or "fedi") is a more inclusive, general term.

Mastodon is just one of many software projects that talk to each other to create this multi-instance social network:

(kudos to @axbom for this fantastic infographic!)

There are blogs, Reddit-like communities, video instances and many more, all part of fedi.

@rysiek @axbom I don't see most users caring about this distinction, or changing terminology.

On the plus side, it means you get to recycle this post every few months for the foreseeable future

@joetrev yay! recycling! ♻️

Seriously though, it's more about giving context that other compatible services exist, the language is kind of just a hook.

@rysiek, a question: why is it so important to you to point out all of these other services to people who just came here for the microblogging?

Is it just that you feel it's interesting? Is it that you think everyone should find it important? Do you recognize not everyone will find it important?

To me, at least, it feels like you're insisting we have to find that the most important thing - and to me, it isn't and never will be.

@AutisticTeacherGriff
It's just confusing, the fact that people call everything here Mastodon. It's fedi. Fediverse.
Just as people called every phone iphone or every email gmail or every car mercedes, etc., it would be also confusing.

@axbom @joetrev @TeacherGriff @rysiek It's as important to them as it is that you keep posting variations of this under every reply of his 😉
