Who Is “Web3” For?
https://strangematters.coop/web3-vs-fediverse-decentralized-internet/
> Like radioactivity, blockchain can be a useful tool in solving certain kinds of problems. Like dental hygiene, the decentralization of global communication platforms is an important problem, but not necessarily the right application for the instrument.
> Like Doromad Radioactive Toothpaste, web3 has little to do with solving the stated problem, and everything to do with profiting off of a buzzword, resulting in more harm than good in the process.
In other words I got to turn my "#web3 is to decentralization what radioactive toothpaste is to dental hygiene" hot take from a while ago into an actual published piece.
I think it went pretty well. Also, it mentions #Fediverse front-and-center, as an actually viable solution to the problem of centralized public debate spaces online.
Feedback welcome!
Also, shout out to @pluralistic and @mmasnick — I link to and lean on two important pieces of theirs:
"Moneylike", by Cory Doctorow:

"Protocols, not Platforms", by Mike Masnick

Seriously, go read them.
Very excited to be able to @-bother them both on fedi!
I also cannot overstate how important the work done by @molly0xfff is.
Her @web3isgreat is a crucial service to the society. Check it out.
Also, do read or watch the talk of hers, "Is web3 bullshit?":

> There will be a web3. The web has been evolving ever since its inception, and there is no doubt in my mind that we are overdue for a fundamental shift. Will it be blockchains and crypto? Venture capitalists and blockchain startup founders really hope that you think so.
Finally, while writing my piece I noted out some half-baked thoughts on how web3 stuff is actually way closer to platforms than protocols.
It seems to me that on a web3-based social network, you'd be stuck with a specific blockchain, specific tokens, specific smart contracts.
It feels not much different from using, say, Telegram, where the client and protocol are open, but you're stuck with a specific provider.
I will ruminate on this for a bit and perhaps write something on that later.
@rysiek @molly0xfff @web3isgreat I seem to remember when the "web3" term was used for some technologies promising p2p web - like https://beakerbrowser.com/ and related tech. I missed the point when those technologies seemed to have been abandoned and the term was taken by crypto bros.
@halas the technologies got abandoned *because* cryptobros took over the term.
They did not fill a niche left over by others, they pushed others out to milk the space for profit.
@rysiek @molly0xfff @web3isgreat one day when I have time I need to research what is happening with the people who were pushing for baker browser and what they do these days. I loved the project and believe it has potential.
@rysiek @molly0xfff @web3isgreat She is killing it, explaining what is happening and not spinning it into unicorns and ponies for all.
Great stuff!
@rysiek I do think labeling themselves as the next iteration of the web was a foolish attempt. While blockchain as a technology has it's place, it alone can't be everything and it shouldn't try to be. The fact I dozens of competing extensions just to use any of them undermines their ability to join the ranks of technologies that have become actual standards.
@rysiek @pluralistic @mmasnick
full ack to the content.
When you write about BlueSky, a link to https://atproto.com would be nice.
[although to be fair then also for AP/AS specs., maybe footnotes :)]
For the case that your page does not support https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/@media/prefers-contrast with better:
The link color is too light and not accessible. :)
@sl007 there are links both to atproto.com, and to ActivityPub W3C spec in the text.
As much as I agree on the a11y aspect, this is not my site, it's an online publisher; I have no control over the theme used on the website.
