I'd like to share some thought about and :

Many things we run, the cloud is just too expensive and too much.

The thing is, it's 2023 and we get enough Mbit/Gbit at home. IPv6. Affordable performant hardware (ARM) and cheap electricity with PVs and Sun from ~9-17.

Why not have a marketplace to share some computing/network/electricity at your home? Your workload could even shift towards the "sunlight".

?

@resmo that sounds interesting - well not for sharing but self hosting kind of solution

@resmo I do part of this already bastianwidmer.ch/v7/project-20

this powers my ARM devices and has enough juice to charge notebooks etc. I've upgraded the battery lately and plan to make that a more permanent thing. In theory i could run most of my local network via this. but that needs some considerations vor 12V gear :)

@dasrecht but you don't share your resources, do you?

@resmo not yet, was thinking of self hosting something but i only have a cgnat in front of me

@dasrecht @resmo IMO sharing resources is not trivial. There are legal and security considerations depending on the resources you want to share. But we sort of do that at least within the family (i.e. trusted user group)

@0x616469 @dasrecht @resmo I do it like that: Sharing a Nextcloud on my NAS at home, exposed via rathole to the Internet, with my family. Unfortunately without sun power and battery yet.

@tobru @0x616469 @dasrecht yeah no, I more meant to "share" computer resource like to run a VM or container rather than a service. Services are not too hard to host, right.
