Another question. I love memorizing poems, and having my students do so. I’m wondering what you have memorized? If you do. I’m always surprised by who has poems inside of them, and what those poems are. My twins and I still love to recite bits of Caroline Bergvall’s More Pets. I also have the opening to Dionne Brand’s Thirsty, which I adore. For me it’s mostly fragments—Dickinson, Plath. I’m compiling a selection for an essay. Would love to hear what you have.

@queyras I'm one of those people who tends to be able to remember parts of poems. I did some work once with Andrew Motion, the former poet laureate, who compiled a wonderful anthology of poems to be learned by heart. I intend to keep my memory in shape by learning some new ones!

@queyras I’m decent at memorizing, but I’m not great at retaining it over a longer period, and yet Shel Silverstein’s “My Beard” will stick forever.

@queyras
My brain really hates memorization. That being said, at one time I had The Raven and several Shel Silverstein poems memorized. I can only recall the obvious bits of any of them now.
