The lesson of this story (of a Catholic blog using commercially resold Grindr data to out a gay priest) is *either* that anonymised data can always be de-anonymised (pretty much the intuition of lots of experts I know), or, less generally, you can't expect an org that benefits from selling other people's data to calibrate how much they should spend on anonymising.

Why do so many things have unnecessarily large fixed headers, do you not want me to see the content and adverts that fill 50% of the page?

🇬🇧 After the #GDPR and the #ePrivacy Regulation, the #DigitalServicesAct #DSA is the next major EU project to shape the digital revolution.

We #Pirates advocate i.e.
➡️ a right to #anonymity online
➡️ phase out #microtargeting
➡️ no pervasive recording of online activities

My present Recaptcha policy:

Request audio.

Respond "Fuck you Google"

Repeat until access granted, or the joy fades.

Bonus: All audio AI parsing tends to "Fuck you Google".

IPv4 addresses used to be gratis. Today they're selling for ~40 USD each. Ford (!!) got 16.7 million IPs for free, hardly using them. Today they're worth $670M, a better value increase than any crypto currency. At the same time new ISPs can't be started because lack of IPs.

The result is that all this DRM and spying and nonsense hoops around copyrighted content means jack shit and contributes fuck all to society, while maybe adding a rounding error amount of money to feed the Owner-Lords.

EU withheld a study that shows piracy doesn't hurt sales

engadget.com/2017-09-22-eu-sup

In 2013, the European Commission ordered a €360,000 ($430,000) study on how piracy affects sales of music, books, movies and games in the EU. However, it never ended up showing it to the public except for one cherry-picked section. That's possibly because the study concluded that there was no evidence that piracy affects copyrighted sales, and in the case of video games, might actually help them.

A sad day for #FreeSoftware, #Kerala forgets its legacy in leading the world and falls for Google's 'free of cost' service.

thehindu.com/news/national/ker

I think we should educate teachers and general public about dangers of surveillance capitalism where you pay with your data, privacy and even at the cost of losing our political agency to big companies. #Google is providing 'Free of Cost' only because they know to make money out of people's data and has a monopoly in online ads. Would you join me?

yt-dlp is a well-maintained youtube-dl fork that adds many new extractors and fixes many existing ones.

If you're happy with youtube-dl, I'd stick with that, but if you're experiencing issues then yt-dlp is worth trying.

This is why I don't like searching the web. You have to wade through 95% absolute crap websites that do their best trying to waste your time and energy with content that looks authentic and interesting but is really all bollocks, dogshite and plagiarism.

Well that, and the fact that it usually takes up to 10 seconds for a website to load these days (30+ on my phone).

If it's not on wikipedia or wiktionary I mostly don't bother looking further.

I feel like someone at Microsoft is watching KDE Plasma a little bit too closely...

Plasma's slogan since 2017: "Simple by default, powerful when needed"

Microsoft advertising Windows 11: "Simple by default, powerful by choice"

Really? 🤔
