We finally have a platform that can compete with :insta:. The Guardian · Big tech is picking apart European democracy, but there is a solution: switch off its algorithmsBy Johnny Ryan

@mudaste @pixelfed how is the algorithm problem solved? What do you mean by that?

@cubeofcheese @pixelfed "Much like Mastodon, Pixelfed implements chronological timelines without content manipulation algorithms."

@mudaste @pixelfed okay you're saying algorithms are a problem and pixelfed's lack of one is a solution

@mudaste @pixelfed personally I don't think algorithms are entirely bad. They can help with content discovery.
I think it's bad to *only* provide algorithms with chronological timelines and I think it's bad to not give users control and insight into the algorithms they use.
I think the fediverse could actually benefit a lot from some open and configurable algorithms as an option.

@cubeofcheese @pixelfed I've never given it much thought, but right now I think it's more urgent to eliminate the problem of big tech algorithms and their manipulation by guaranteeing good alternatives. Anyway, in the fediverse we always have lists and hashtags that everyone can follow in an organized way, so we can follow our interests more closely. But I admit that if there were algorithms that we could control, it might be good to deliver more content of interest to each of us. I'm not sure.
